MG MG Y Type - Spare Wheel cover restraints

When the rust was removed from the rear of the YA the chains holding the spare wheel cover were removed. I cannot see where they should be attached.

Never fear, I have a CD with all the manuals that I purchased years ago for the day when I would have a workshop and could use workshop and parts manuals.

Hmmm ... CD stopped working when Windows Vista came out and as I run Win7 and Win8 the copy protection on the CD will not work so I have a very expensive disc of polycarbonate that is totally useless!!

Can anyone please supply some useful pictures or diagrams so that I can reattach the chains and prevent the cover falling down and ripping the wires out of the tail-lights. (Oh well, just another little task, to wire them up again.)

Thanks in advance
Murray

Hi Murray

Normally if people have any issues with the CDs they contact us directly rather than using the Bulletin Board, and in fairness, yours is the first complaint that we have with many of our users using Windows 95, 98, Vista, Millenium, XP, XP Pro, Windows 7 and now Windows 8 too.

Please can we take this discussion off line for now and can I ask you please to contact David Pelham (prman@mgytypes.org) who will probably be able to attend to your enquiries and questions more timely than I can owing to the fact that I am currently overloaded with work?

Thank you

Just to endorse Paul’s posting on the CDs, I have just purchased (last week) the latest Acer i5 processor, 8gb laptop running Windows 8 and all of the CDs distributed by YZ publications work perfectly on it.

When the products were launched Windows 7 (both 32 bit & 64 bit) was the current operating system. When Windows 8 was launched in October of last year I arranged for all the discs to be tested to confirm compatibility. This was confirmed and I posted details of this on the Bulletin Board.

Windows 8 in simple terms has a new front door, the ‘Start’ button has been removed but there are two ‘Apps’ that can be downloaded to provide you with earlier Windows type screen; both are free. The App on the Windows store provides you with a Windows 7 Start Menu and you can toggle between Windows 7 and Windows 8. The other version, ‘Classic Shell’ can be downloaded from CNET gives you the options of XP, Vista or Windows 7 Start Menus.

Getting back to the problem it is probably associated to the fact that the CD has an Autorun file on it and the security settings of your computer are stopping it from executing. All CDs were originally tested on a variety of PCs & laptops running standard versions of Windows. Some manufacturers ‘personalise’ the operating system. I know on my daughter’s Dell laptop it came pre-loaded with Nero Multi-media software and therefore Windows Media Player, the standard product, has been pushed to one side.

Manufacturers also load numerous versions of anti-virus software, hoping that owners will sign up, undoubtedly for a commission, once the trial period expires. Most anti-virus programs with standard settings will also try and limit you with running auto-exec files on CDs, USB drives etc. In most cases this is just a matter of resetting a flag, or in the worst case going off-line and suspending the anti-virus software.

I will contact you off line to see if we can resolve this issue.

As another aside I have fitted ‘Snap Connectors’ to both my cars. These enable you to remove the spare wheel cover totally and reconnect at will. The connectors are available at most electrical suppliers and you need never worry about if the brake lights or rear lights are working once you remove and replace the spare wheel cover. I haven’t bothered with the chains; originality with this provides the potential to damage the paintwork when the cover is hanging on the chains! I attach a photograph showing one of my covers.

Regards.

David.

Thanks,
After the wires falling out today the "Why don't I install a connector" thought raced through the skull.

This thread is NOT, and was never intended to be, about whether or not YZ Publications CDs run on Win8. It was about spare wheel cover chains.

The product I have: (see image)
http://www.motoringclassics.co.uk/post-war-mg-saloons%3Cbr-%3E1948-to-1968/p21788
will NOT run on any version of Windows post XP (Vista, Win7 or Win8)

As a recently retired Director of IT having involvement with computers since 1971 I have a reasonable grasp of things IT-wise.

Cheers

Firstly Murray, my apologies for thinking you were referring to the YZ Publications CDs and it is a relief to know that it is not our product. Thank you for clarifying that.

Moving back to the original purpose of the thread, the connector David sells is just the ticket whether you have chains or not.

That said, the chains at the top snap into the inside edges of the channel around the Spare Wheel compartment, and on the edge of the lid by the turn of the so called Budget Lock - see the attached.

A while ago when I was doing my Y I bought 4 new clips just like the originals ... but can I remember where I bought them? Nope! I will have to do some research as I am sure others want them as I do for my YT!

See the attached photo.

And at the body end attached here.

The clips are very close to the original ones although the tubing is not. Originally the chains were covered in a plastic type tube like the boot lid chains, but smaller diameter as the chains were of a lighter grade. I will do some research and see if I can locate the supplier of the clips.
