MG MG Y Type - Special Tools

Hello,

Interesting page as per link http://www.mgcars.org.uk/imgytr/tools.shtml on special tools. I know the workshop manual refers to the various special tools, but I just wonder how many of the tools are still in existance? I suspect very few, but who knows?

I was going to suggest direct with Paul, maybe consideration of a members only portial might be good addition to the section of the IMGYR, where members if willing may be able to flag up what specialized tools they may own and be willing to share if required by another owner. Members area is merely a tool to protect ID of an owner, facilitate a link for point of contact. Clearly any lending/borrowning would be agreement between the two parties, ie thinking liabilities etc.

Clearly the purpose of my post is to open the suggestion up to other ideas and to verify the need, perhaps there is or isn't such a need? Or perhaps there is already an existing service?

I would be very interested in a supplier of a suitable hub puller...I have got away with using a hammer for years but its not something I like to do!

I happen to have a suitable replacement for the 18G.328....

Very nice page.

Hi Richard,

As to the Members Area, my thoughts are basically negative on that. The whole of our site is a Members Area. I am personally opposed to anything that is, or could be seen to be elitist or exclusive. In my opinion, it immediately sets up a “them and us” situation and the whole ethos of the International MG Y Type Register is inclusive of all, as opposed to anything exclusive.

My personal experience of tool lending has also been somewhat negative in that they walked! It is a painful job accumulating these items and an even bigger one to ship them around even a tiny country like the UK … and then to try and get them back, not to mention a country the size of the US or Australia.

As a borrower/person carrying out a job, you know when you are doing a job it can take you forever and then sometimes you don’t feel like getting on with it, or you are waiting for parts to arrive etc. To then have someone hounding you to return a tool that you borrowed is not helpful.

As a lender you have no control over the pace or security of the tool, or even if when you get it back it may have been damaged or need calibration. Proving initial condition, and collecting on repair bills is unpleasant at the best of times. People also have a nasty tendency to die too when least expected or planned (very irritating!!) and when they do, trying to get your tool back from an estate is a lot of hassle - I have been there and lost equipment that way too despite sending photographs and even going there in person to look for them, so for me there is no way I would do that any more.

Just my thoughts, but what do you all think?

Hats off to you Richard though for the idea and for opening discussion on it.

I would agree with Pauls comments. I have purchased numerous tools such as the front camshaft reamer and the bevel pinion checking fixture. I am happy to let someone use them, BUT, they come to my house to use them. The tools are too hard to find and as Paul said they have a tendancy to grow legs.

A fellow Y-Typer here had his apprentice fitter make all the special tools detailed/dimensioned in the back of the Y-Type Workshop Manual. They all fit nicely in a small wooden box about 8" x 8" x 8".

Lovely piece of kit for working on Y's. I have lost count of the number of times i've used the rear hub puller.

I am lucky enough to borrow this kit when I need it, but it goes straight back after the job is done.

I've lost books over the years, but never tools - I think I'm lucky.
