MG MG Y Type - Speedometer

The speedometer on my YB has stopped working but the mileometer continues to record. Are the two recording instruments not as one in that both should be working or not?
E Winters

Hi Ed,
The speed of the car is registered by a rotating magnet in the speedo, which pulls the speedometer needle round against some sort of resistance, possibly a spring. I think this is how it works although I am open to correction on this!

I had my speedo repaired by John Ostick, at JDO Instruments. email john_ostick@hotmail.com
web www jdo1.com
& tel 01535 672125
Hope this helps

Note to Paul:-
You were asking recently for useful
adresses to publish. I got this one from here before we lost all that sort of information from the site. I must admit I havn't had the car on the road since I had my speedo done, but JDO seems to run an efficient business. It came back promptly, in a very clean condition, and does seem to work!

Hi Tony

That info is still there - check the Links button. JDO are listed und Instrument Repairs.

E Winters - have a look at both the Hints and Tips page and the Technical Advice pages. Your problem, as Tony says, is related to a slipping of your drive. This is most probably due to oil contamination winding up the cable as the cable rotates.

This is all covered in the notes on one or other of those pages so I wont go through it all again.

Come back to me if you have problems finding it.

Good Evening Mr. Winters

I would like to point out that I am selling an entire dashboard for a YB on E-Bay complete with all instruments. When I last used it the speedometer worked fine, but that was over 35 years ago. It's probably still O.K. It might be cheaper to buy this than have your old speedo repaired. Current bid price is £28.56. Auction ends on Sunday.

If you need anytthing else I will be advertising many more items shortly, including a partially dismantled XPAG engine.

Hello Ed

It was good to talk to you this morning. The more I think about your problem the more I seem to remember a similar problem that I had, but it's well over thirty years ago so please bear with me.

If the connection to the speedometer drive cable is loose at either end it might be that some of the time it is driving the speedometer and the oddometer. Some of the time it may be driving neither, but you will notice that the speedometer is not working as you are driving along, but are you sure that the oddometer is working at the same time, and not intermittently? It is well worth checking that both ends are tightly screwed in. It might fix it at no cost!

Just a thought.

Clive, what is your auction item number? It doesn't appear on my listings. Thanks!

Good Evening Mr. Davis

I have tried to reply to your E-Mail address seperately but we seem to have a fault at this end and it may not have gone. The reference numbers that you need are:-

Dashboard 140396698761. Auction ends tomorrow

I also have on offer at the moment a very rusty rear bumper (fender):-

Bumper 140398966459. Auction ends next week

I will be putting up many more items on E-Bay shortly including a partially dismantled XPAG engine, which had been factory reconditioned at least thirty five years ago and has not been used since I obtained it.

If you key in MGYB and click on search you will go to both items.

Clive, Thanks for letting me know about instruments.Unfortunately for me ebay auction got away from me.

OK Ed

Better luck next time. I will be putting many more items on E-Bay shortly, most of which came from my first (cannibalised) YB, and some of which I obtained at various times in case of possible need for my second YB about 35 years ago +. These include a partially dismantled XPAG engine and a gearbox. Sorry I don't have a petrol filler cap, but someone on here may have one spare. Suggest you advertise for one under classified wanted section.

Hope I may be able to help in the future.

Regards

Clive
