MG MG Y Type - Start them young!

Attached is a picture of my 13 year old son Thomas trying to loosen the front engine mount (I know, he's not very hardy yet with the gloves and the cushion).

We are going to investigate where all those worrying noises in the engine come from.

It is so nice to teach Thomas some mechanic skills, even if it doesn't speed up the process.
The simple instruction 'can you remove the generator, please' was meeted with a blank stare as he didn't know what a generator looked like.

While we are tinkering I try to explain how f.i. the generator works.

I say: start them young so that the knowledge survives!

Willem vd Veer

hmmmmm....'was meeted with a blank stare' should read 'was met with a blank stare'....

Willem, Great picture and totally agree. I was 8 years old when I first was captured by the beauty of my uncle’s MG YB and vowed to restore it. When I was 16 I met Paul Barrow who really spurred me into action and kept my interest going. It is so true to get the young heart and mind! This is just the sort of heart warming picture that makes for great Pictures of the Month.

Thomas
Wait till he looks the other way and ------------RUN

William Revit

Yes Richard, I really enjoyed getting you fired up all those years ago. I agree completely with what you say and yes these sorts of pictures would make great Pictures of the Month too.

Willem, congratulations too, great picture and keep his enthusiasm going.

William,

I told Thomas about your instruction and he asked why he should run.

Wouldn't it be nice to be young and unspoilt again. Or is it naïve! ;-)

Way to go there Willem. I agree, start them young. But why wait to age 13. I started this young fellow at age 2. We baby sit my Nieces son one day each week and he just loves the Y and insist on a ride at every visit. Now before each drive he instructs me "Must check oil first Uncle T"
I'm hoping that by age 13 he may be experienced enough to do a gear box rebuild for me. (I wish)
Let's hope that the enthusiasm lasts.
Now I'd better go and do that oil change, that oil looks rather black.

A good thing to start them young. This was the car I sold to get my Y.

Ok Thomas
If you're going to work on the "Y" you're going to have to get your hair cut then. Can't remember back far enough to when I had my hair in my eyes -- no chance of it now Willy
William Revit

I started my eldest daughter Adele at 2 back in 1989..here is a photo of her washing the car.....mind you as she now resides in Melbourne I have to clean it myself these days....

D MULLEN

Terry, that is a good picture, too.

Paul, maybe we can create a new gallery on the site:
Y's and Youngster or Y-Youngsters? :-)
Willem vd Veer

I have just been looking through them and I love them. I am not too sure that we could include Butch's picture though as it would be classified as INDECENT by many of us, myself included – and MGA on the Y site that is!

LOL

Yes, Y Not?
Paul Barrow

be carefull, there are some strange people out there------
William Revit

Hey Butch
That must have been a lovely car when finished. I have always had a soft spot for MGA's and sold a TA for one last year. I still have the YT though. A fun combination. A mix of style and nostalgia and both great fun to drive.

All the best

Hello Jerry. It was a pleasure to drive. I don't know what I did right, but she loved to rev. It also took second place at the Vail Gof west in the late model class. My son rode in that car and played in the footwell with his toys while my wife drove. I was driving our TD with our daughter. Both kids had MGBGT's when they reached driving age.

I've got another picture of my son washing our mazda around the same time, the cement was hot so he was standing in the bucket of water.

We are delighted to announce our response to your request and have added a new page to the International MG Y Type Register website for Ys and "Y"oungsters! Please go to www.mgytypes.org and check it out - there are some superb pictures that have been sent in already and we are ready for more! As Terry Ciantar says on the page - "The look on their faces - Priceless".

This photo has been out before, it was taken at a lunch stop in northern France on our way back from Italy. We had attended an MG rally in south Germany and then we had pushed on over the Alpes to show the Kids Venice. They soon gave up 'are we nearly there' although I'm not sure they liked the Y type any more for it.

Nice to see fellow owner in their 30s with Y. See today's update on IMGYTR I calculate Iain must have been about 36 years on purchase. Great choice, the average age of ownership is falling slowly.
