MG MG Y Type - Starter Button

Hi Folks,

Happy New Year

I have an early Y which should have a Lucas 76438 type starter switch fitted and operated by a PUSH button and rod assembly from the dash.

My car has had an electric push button fitted to the dash with a Mini type starter switch.

I have been able to source the correct starter switch but now need to find the manual push button and rod.

Can anyone help me source these items?

These are very rare now. I did have one somewhere but cannot locate it in my stores currently. However, I am wondering if these were also on the S V and W cars and they may be able to advise you where you can go to get what you need. Try http://www.svwregister.co.uk and contact them to see if they can help you out.

Best wishes

Hi Rob

I have exactly the same fitting on my TA which has an XPAW engine. I wonder whether Paul Beck's site can help. He does list 3 different types of switches which are of a push contact nature. I think that a similar arrangement was fitted to early J2/K and L Type MG's - but not sure of these.

In Lawson's 'Y Type Saloons and Tourers' there is a section entitled Alternative Parts List.

He lists two starter switch solenoids (and presumably the push button may/may not have been supplied LUCAS ST 764401 (to Y4459) as an alternative REMAX ES1624 and LUCAS 76438B (as you mentioned). These were also fitted to Austin A30's and A35's and early Morris Minors.

Hope this is of some help.

Was the contact in Harborne any good for your trimming work?

Have a Good New Year.

All the best

Hi Rob

If you google the Morris Minor Centre you will find a comprehensive list of parts. Click on 'Electrical' and scroll down.

There is a part no SWH108E 'Starter solenoid with push button' £18.59. There is no illustration but it might be worth following up.

I'll have a look in the garage and see if by anychance I have a spare knob.

Cheers

The full Alternate Parts List can be downloaded from the sidebar of the News page at http://www.mgytypes.org.

Great tip Jerry if the TA has the same push mechanism. This is not documented in the Alternate Parts List though. Paul Beck can be found on the Links page.

Hi All,

Thanks for your responses Paul and Jerry...a very happy new year to you both.

I have attached an image taken from the 1949 Lucas parts list for the Y Type.

It shows the assembly 76406B this incorporates starter solenoid switch (same as 76438) together with the push rod and button which do not appear to have part numbers of their own.

Jerry...having looked through the Moss T Type parts catalogue I came to the conclusion that all of the T's had cable operated and therefore PULL type arrangements?

I am pursuing SVW and Minor fitments and Paul Beck as suggested.

Jerry,

Part number 764401 as mentioned in Lawsons book is the PULL type - oval shaped- starter switch which was fitted to export models and later to all Ys with the central battery box.
I think that it took up less space than the bulkier circular version.
Typically these oval switches are widely available.....
early Y Types certainly seem to provide more headaches than later versions!

Hi Folks,

Update on the above...I am told by the SVW register that the pre war saloons all had a PULL starter.

I believe that the Morris Minor PUSH starter was floor mounted as in the early Minis.

No joy with Paul Beck either.

Hi Rob

You might try The Electrical Parts Company Limited (01584 811575)who are based in Tenbury Wells. They are suppliers of genuine Lucas electrical parts and components from mid 1930's -mid 1970's.

Their website is not very informative but they may be able to help.

Please let me know if you have any success.

All the best,

Hi Rob

Looking in Lawrence's 'Let there be Y's' on page 75 he discusses starter switches. On Y saloons up to Y4459 the lucas Model ST18 Type L/15 Service No 76406B was used. This was a 'push button' starter. On Y Saloons from Y4460 and all YT's and all YB's a Lucas Model ST19 Type L Service No 764401 switch was employed. This was a pull starter.

He goes on to add that 'The Lucas Model ST19 Starter Switch was introduced, out of necessity, on cars fitted with the centrally positioned battery box. He mentiones that 'right hand saloons with centrally positioned battery boxes were definitely built prior to Y 4460 -these must also have been fitted with the new starter switch.

I note that these numbers appear to differ from 76438 type that you mentioned in your earlier posting! The rest is spot on - anyhow perhaps the Electrical Parts Company may be able to assist. The source of the advert is from 'The Automobile' an excellent magazine that includes a range of useful contacts and suppliers.

Sincerely

My apologies Rob

Had I bothered to read your later postings together with the pic I would have realised that the initial posting number was a typo!

Did you get sorted out on this one? While looking for something else (as is ever the way) I found your entire push button, rods and firewall switch.

Contact me off line if you still need these.
