MG MG Y Type - Starter Problems

I had intended to take UHK 111 to the annual MGCC SEC event last month but on the morning she refused to start and I have never really got the hang of the starting handle! Her battery is fully charged but the starter turns very slowly - indeed like it would if the battery were flat. The starter is not jammed or stiff so all I can assume is that it has a fault? But I had used the car only the week before and it was fine. Any ideas on a diagnosis? Taking a look at it the starter looks like its at least 30 years old. Thanks!

I have just solved the same problem by replacing the starter motor in my YA. I took the old on to a local chap who took one look at and said "Not worth touching I can sell you a new one for £65" She now turns over very fast. He said the starter motors are still made at the old Lucas factory.
Simple in out replacement with long extension on your socket, don't be tempted to lubricate the new starter dog as it will pick up dust from the clutch and cause sticking problems later.

Peter,

Nice to hear GB still makes some original parts.

Mark it could be as simple as a bad engine earth, check that the connections are clean on the earth strap from engine to chassis . It is sited at the bottom of the engine breather pipe on the other side of the engine to the starter motor.

Thanks all. I checked the earth and it looked fine. Will check again tomorrow but I fear its just packed in..

If you are convinced that the motor needs replaceing, then Beaulieu Autojumble this weekend is your best bet. Classic and Vintage Dynamos are on Red stand 246 and will either supply a replacement outright or exchange, or rebuild your own unit for you. If you buy a replacement, check first to see if you need a three or two bolt fixing flange.
I have no financial link, but have known and used them for many years.

Incidentally re this, the starter motor turned out to be fine. It was the battery. Though it showed plenty of charge with a multi meter and a charger, when it was placed under load by the starter it just dropped away to nothing. New battery sorted out the issue..

Glad you got sorted out.
