MG MG Y Type - Steering column draught seal

Can anybody help, on a Y type where the steering column passes through the bulkhead should there be a rubber seal? If so a description or image would be very useful. TIA
Richard Verrill

I had mine made up from a piece of vinyl that matched my seat backs material. I had a cone made up that I had seamed to fit the column and widened down to the base where I had another piece stitched on to make a flange. This then sits under a plate ring that was secured to the foot board.

Thanks Paul, I had something similar in mind but wondered what was original? If originally rubber I had thought I would have it made up by 3D printing and an original description would be useful. I cannot remember what was on my YB when I rebuilt her back in the 70s.

NTG sell them. Not really cheap - picture can be seen on their website "mgbits4u"

Thanks Anton, the was my first port of call, had been through their rubber parts list and I don't see a seal for the steering column can you provide part number?

Found it, I rather thought the seal would be rubber as my P type. A very simple sewing job, so out with the sewing machine, thanks Richard

Prompted by a TA footwell picture in Octagon C C Bulletin I have had another look at my Y type workshop manual, the seal on page M-8 part number 68 looks very similar to the TA steering column seal, this raises a question is the NTG vinyl sleeve style seal an original design? Also in the exploded steering gear drawing part 69 a clip is shown, what is this for?
Richard Verrill

Here is a photo of the column seal in place in an unrestored YA. You can see the clamp is around the column.

Sorry about the photo quality, but you can only do so much with a smartphone.

Thanks Tony, that is extremely useful, can you confirm it is a rexine/vinyl gaiter that forms the seal rather than rubber? Regards Richard
Richard Verrill

Yes, it is rexine/vinyl.

Cheers

Here is the MG-TD from 1952.
Similar but made of leather.
