MG MG Y Type - Steering column slip ring

I am about to assemble the steering column and its slip ring for the turn signal electrics. I studied all the available documentation, also all threads here in the archive, but I canīt find any information how to fix the inner slip ring to the inner column.
The 2 circlips which hold the 2 halfs, do not press that firm, that the inner rings "stands still". It slides a bit during steering turn movement and can also move up and down and then the 4 contacts do not align anymore with the outer slip ring.
Probably a little bolts should fix it to the inner column?

The Slip rings are not attached to the inner column but 'float' over the top of the fingers on the inner column.

The slip ring assembly is only connected to the outer column by the 3 BA screws at the top and no where else. The outer column is then held in place by the clamps inside the cockpit under the dash board.

Paul, with slip ring you mean the outer part. But I am talking about the inner part, consisting of the 2 halfs. This part, resp. the 2 halfs are only hold to their base (inner steering column) by the 2 circlips. And they are not strong enough, to keep it in place. This inner part (with the sliding fingers on it) needs to be fixed to the inner steering column -- the circlips are not enough.

Thatīs why I think a little bolt, or a notch is needed

I found the answer to my question -- see photo -- the half of the inner slip ring should have a notch, which is broken away. The column has a hole, but the notch is missing.
Putting a question forces to think twice ;-)

OK so to fix that, try this:

1 measure the diameter of the hole in the column.

2 drill the slip ring where the stud was broken off with a drill bit two sizes smaller

3 tap the hole you just drilled and then insert a threaded screw to fit the tap so that the tip of the screw extended about 1/8 inch.

4 you may need to countersink the head of the screw too so pick a small head. If necessary Dremil the head of the screw down.

Hi Walter/Paul,
Be very careful tapping a thread into the inner slip ring Bakelite - it's easily broken. Just epoxy the screw in the hole - it will hold for years.

A dab of acetone (nail polish remover)on the Bakelite will help the epoxy to penetrate/adhere to the oily Bakelite.

Cheers

Thanks Paul and Tony,
I did it that way
