Parts

MG parts spares and accessories are available for MG T Series (TA, MG TB, MG TC, MG TD, MG TF), Magnette, MGA, Twin cam, MGB, MGBGT, MGC, MGC GT, MG Midget, Sprite and other MG models from British car spares company LBCarCo.

MG MG Y Type - steering gaitors.

My Ya has just passed its mot with flying colours. The tester said however that one steering gaitor was about to give up the ghost. I have just replaced it.(I've got the bloodstains to prove it). The question that this has posed is: Why do Ya gaitors cost £21 when MGB gaitor are only £9 and they are patently interchangable. Is there a crib sheet somewhere that details these kind of savings?

While I totally sympathise with the torn knuckles (most of us have been there more times than we care to mention) it would not be approriate for anyone to comment on the differential in picing charged by vendors between similar parts or even the same part for different applications. That is a question best left for you to ask the vendors themselves I think.

However, to help overcome this sort of problem, if you go to the News Page on www.mgytypes.org, scroll down the page and in the column of downloads you will find the Alternate Parts List. Hopefully this will help you - it certainly helped me at swapmeets and autojumbles to get better prices by asking for a part for an Austin A40 or whatever else the part I wanted would go on than asking for an MG Y Types.

Why do people charge more for different applications? Because the can??

Good luck and let me know if you have difficulty finding the list.

Years ago a chap said to me (on seeing my YB) ..'You know what MG stands for?'...when I answered Morris Garages he say 'no...Mugs Game' ..he said that as soon as a supplier of old car parts heard the wanted bit was for an MG they doubled the price..presumably they thought (wrongly in my case) that only those with some ready cash had MGs! ;whereas if the same part was for an Austin or Morris it was usually a lot cheaper. As Paul said always go by part or manufacturers number or if it fits a Morris etc mention that.

Hi Ian

If you had visited the MG Octagon Car Club site you would have found what you needed! For members £7.40 and for non member £9.25 both including VAT but obviously not delivery. I can guess who the suppliers were who had such a hefty mark up!

The Octagon Club are going through their parts lists and will I understand be producing a more comprehensive list. Many parts from the Octagon are cheaper than those supplied by the principal dealers. However, some are not. Pete Moore, who has taken over from Geoff Trevena, who retired at the end of December 2012, as Secretary is well worth contacting. I am sure that there will be an upgrading of the products and hopefully the website that the Club offers.

Supporting the Octagon is vital as they supply a range of parts for our cars.

Dave is quite right- say it’s for an MG and the price on unpriced spares attracts a hefty increase in some instances.

I can recall in the 70's asking at a Tyre Factors the cost of a 16 x 525 tyre - and the guy said 'ah you’ll be wanting that for a trailer' - of course and he gave me the price and when I said in fact it's for am MG Y Type he smiled and said - 'always seek a more humble alternative'. As Paul mentioned the 'Alternative Parts List' is well worth a visit. Then speak to the appropriate car club for an indication of price and availability.

All the best

Hi Jerry,
I endorse your comments. Asto the supplier in question I'm Not Telling. Good job too. While im on line has anyone had trouble with aftermarket starter solenoids from THAT source. I've burnt out three and got sick of sending them back and replaced them with the slightly rusty original 60 year old one. regards Ian

Jerry,

"Supporting the Octagon is vital as they supply a range of parts for our cars."

You've nailed it on the head, by far the first choice club I would join, parts supply is what a club should be primary concerned about, protecting owners by making market economy of scale, investing in ventures that to commercial company may not be viable.
