MG MG Y Type - steering wheel signal lights

Hey all, the YT has a horn button and a turn signal switch built into the steering wheel. I can find no wiring diagram for this in a YT, Was this type of steering wheel/column common to the YT? Thanks, Tom

I am no expert on Ys, but I believe all Ys came with the central horn/ indicator dial.

For a wiring diagram go to the IMGYTR website and look at the wiring diagrams Paul has published. The YB is probably a good one to view as it shows the connections from the Horn/ Indicator switch to the Steering Column Control Slipring and on to indicators and horn (partial extract attached).

Paul Barrow is the person to contact if you need the clockwork in the Horn/ Indicator switch repaired etc.

cheers

Hi Tom

I believe (if I remember your car correctly) you have a Y/T EX(U) so look at the wire diagram for that derivative and you should find what you are wanting. Most Y/Ts were NOT fitted with turn signals or the clockwork mechanism so do not have the wiring either. They only have the horn.

If its any help this diagram is for a 1948 YA Its simple to convert to flashing indicators by interrupting the feed to 17 on the trafficator switch and inserting a flashing indicator unit. I assume the steering column is fitted with a 4 contact slip ring assembly Bryan

I presume you have already checked the wiring diagrams available to you in the Technical Centre under http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/techdata.shtml then click on Wiring Diagrams?

Dear all, I have successfully installed a signal light system using the steering wheel "switch". Part of the circuit was already in place and part was newly wired. If anyone is interested, I can make a sketch and right a brief "how to". At least in my mind the "Y" is now a safer car. Tom

We love that sort of thing for Hints & Tips on the website, please send it to Paul.

Great work
