MG MG Y Type - Sunroof drain tubing

Hi Guys,

I am struggling to get the front sunroof drain tube up the side window pillars. I am using 3/4 bore pipe which is 1" OD, it seems far to big, is there trick I am missing or should I be using 1/2 bore pipe and then warm up to fit on the drain pipe. Any advise would be appreciated and any link to suppliers might also help.

Cheers Chris

Join the club....this is a long standing problem. The problem is either the tube is slightly too wide or there is an obstruction where it goes through the body. Have a good look with a torch whilst lying on your back and be prepared for back ache!

I have not had to renew the drain pipes on my YB (yet!), but I have had problems getting replacement tubing for other old car applications. One of the problems is that the tubes now available are metric - either a shade too big or too small.

You might try a bit of nylon reinforced garden hose, easily sourced from garden centres or B & Q and relatively cheap. This tends to be much thinner walled than industrial hose and will stretch more easily over the roof spigots.

I would say the thinest wall you can find with an Inside diameter to match the pipe you are going to have to mate to.

Rather than push UP you might also try feeding it DOWN. Sometimes this is easier!

It's possible with 3/4" tube but with VERY great difficulty (I've done it) and with a lot of grinding to enlarge the hole below the running board and also where the tube does a right angle bend near it's attachment to the sun roof drain.
Also you would have to remove the interior trim at the footwell to push & pull.
The original tubing on my YA is 1/2" dia rubber, forced over the stub tube attachment (3/4") and secured with a hose clip. Trouble is, most of the available hose these days seems to be reinforced, and is too stiff radially to be able to do this.
My advice is to try all your local garden centres for a softer, more flexible hose - it is available.

Regards and best of luck!!

While on the subject, can anybody help with the rear drain tube attachments. Where are they exactly? The picture in my w'shop manual (for a YB) is so poor I can't tell and I don't want to remove any more headlining than necessary.

Instead of trying to put a right angle bend in the rear drain hoses, with the risk of kinking the tube, I bought some right angled plastic fittings for a garden sprinkler system from my local hardware store, and used those. They are designed to fit inside a tube with ½" ID, and make going around corners in a confined space a lot easier

Thanks for your comment guys I have now managed OK. I found some thin wall 5/8"(16mm) bore(19mm OD)clear pipe from
http://hoseworld.com/acatalog/CLEAR_UNREINFORCED_PVC_TUBING.html
I put some wire down from the top opening and pulled the tube through this pipe size pipe pulled through quite easy.

Tony the rear drain tube attachments are 15" to the rear of the sunroof opening in the roof.

Chris,
A double thanks really. Hose World might be a useful website for radiator hose etc. although I haven't checked their prices.
Kind Regards,
