MG MG Y Type - Sunroof drains-awkward

We had fun today replacing the sunroof drains as the old drain pipes had perished and were difficult to remove, especially the front ones . This job was holding up progress on the resto. of Y 6103. Fun is not quite the right word but it was two person job trying to extricate he old pipe downwards with a SS wire runnning down the pipe with one with screwdriver piercing and levering downwards at the midway point and the other delicately applying ( I won't say pulling ) pressure on the what was left of the lower end which kept breaking away .Persistance and patience prevailed when finally all pieces were removed - glee.

A new 1/2 inch heater hose was guided down over the SS braided wire which seemed to be the perfect size through the the lower reaches of the internal wall space . This bore matched the metal drain outlet from the roof . As it was not possible to place a larger bore pipe which would have matched the outlet, a larger 3/4 inch rubber heater hose slid over the smaller diameter hose and attached to the outlet with a little juggle . Two compression clips were used to hold in place with minimal pressure on the rubber to rubber joint and we believed the inner pipe was made to contact the metal outlet to avoid or minimise a step in the join . This interconnecting larger bore pipe was approx 2 inches ( 5 cms ) in length .
Tears and shouts of joy on this success

We , were two Y ers from long past doing the job today( didn't have to do this on the YT I had then) and I placed plastic clear hose on Y 1932 28 years ago and have forgotten the joy of doing that one- how could I forget but I did. This car I still have and there is another waiting in the wings Y 0670 awaiting the same treatment .

This car may never see rain, but living in Melbourne who can tell .

Congratulations Clive - not easy but satisfying when done and one that will not need redoing for a while!

Probably a silly question, but can this job only be done with the headlining removed. I only ask as not knowing the state of these pipes has always worried me,

Hi John, The factory fitted drain tubes are an unreinforced rubber hose. After 70 years of even the best care & attention, they are likely to be starting to perish & split.

You will need to remove the four corners of the hood lining at least which is not a 5 minute job, however, a leaking 70 year old hose can start a lot of water damage very quickly to the interior trim and supporting woodwork. Then there is the potential for rust in hard to repair areas !.

Maybe a job for the end of this summer.

We are still waiting for winter here. They say it may happen next Wednesday or Thursday - can't be sure......

Cheers

Thanks for that Tony. The timing over here is similar - summer may happen next Wednesday or Thursday,

Currently enjoying a lovely summer here in the Pacific Northwest! Not sure how long it will continue but it is very welcome after the long rainy winter we just had!

Just a reminder to Clive and John: when removing your old drain tubes from the roof stubs, look for genuine original "Jubilee Clips" which are highly prized among some restorers for engine bay originality! Just sayin' ... regards, John.

John, I have kept the clips I took off and replaced with new as you could see. Can you show me a pic of original"Jubilee Clips " .
CR Dickinson

Hi Clive - this is not a good photo, but gives you the general idea. I should be able to take a couple of shots tomorrow showing the style of head, inscription and so on. I didn't explain very well earlier, that I found my rare original Jubilee clips hidden away securing the drain hoses, and will redeploy them in an engine bay location (Y or TC probably) rather than hide them under the headlining for another 70 years!
So I'm alerting you and others who might find these little beauties hidden away.
Yours, John.

What is the I.D. of the drain pipe?

Another attempted photo showing the script : Terry Jubilee Patent Size 0. Sorry, I-Pad not taking good photos - or is it me taking the photos! John.
