MG MG Y Type - targets, targets, targets

The Y-website http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgccy/ is celebrating their 200th Y on "Y's on Parade"! The original aim was 50 Y's so congratulations with this result.

After breaking through this barrier, the temptation proved too great to formulate a new target, it's now 250 Y's on Parade.
But, gentlemen of the Y-register, please consider that many Y-owners have their car as an escape to the daily ratrace at work where they have to reach targets, and when the targets are reached the targets are raised again and again and aaaaarghh.
My Y5888 is on parade but because of the target of 250 I now feel the urge, pressure and obligation to track down other Dutch Y's (I know of at least four....) that are not on Parade. Maybe I'll have to look at origami to escape this pressure?

Greetings,
Willem

Hi Willem

Always a delight to hear from you, and always very humourous! Never quit your day job, whatever the pressure!!

Actually, the next aim is 251 not 250. I chose the figure 251 carefully as it is a) the old works phone nuumber (Abingdon 251 - see your handbook!!) and because both Ys (YA/YT) and YBs began their numbering sequences began Y 0251 and YB 0251.

Absolutely no pressure on you at all, but it would be lovely to see your fellow countrymen's Ys on the Parade it goes without saying.

Seriously, please do not view it as a target, more as a milestone, or for our european friends a kilometer mark!

Lots of love to your Y Type for me please Willem.

Paul - It was common practice up until the start of the MGBs for each model of MG that the first one was serial 0251. TC 0251 is in British Columbia and TD 0251 was in the Northwest MG 'T' Register in Washington state for a period of time (It is my understanding that someone in England eventually purchased it). Cheers - Dave

David: It is TA 0251 that is in British Columbia, i.e. the very first T series. It is very much a prototype with P type instruments and a unique treatment of the rear of the body.Think the best evidence is that TC 0251 was a remade TB and has disappeared but TC 0252 was acquired by someone in Seattle 5-6 years ago and may still be there. No info on TD 0251. Terry

Thanks Terry - was aware of that, but wanted to focus on the Y Type element (I am just a bit biased afterall!).

I wonder where Y 0251 and YB 0251 are now though?

Terry - I stand corrected regarding the TA. I should have remembered that as it was at one of our events a number of years ago. TC 0251 has not shown up in our Register yet (possibly in the TC Tourers). The earliest TC we have registered is 0465. Cheers - Dave
PS. How's the fuel pump doing? Still running ok I hope.

251.... I should have known that!

nothing to do with Ys but the first MGA was 10101 - following on from the last TF.

Paul,

This weekend I discovered (again) that language is a beautiful thing; just to illustrate to my wife what a sorry lot we are, I told her you wished lots of love to my Y for you. She reacted very flattered and asked what I told you about her for you to be so friendly. I realised she thought I said “love to my wife for you” and mumbled an incoherant explanation.

I then started thinking one can’t say everything on a typical Y-meeting, imagine the casual passerby overhearing the following conversations:
“Later in the evening the two of us must take your Y for a ride”
“Did you download those pictures of my Y from the internet?”
“No, but Steve Simmons posted some, one of the backside and one much commented on “look how she leaks” picture of his Y for us to enjoy”
“You must look at my Y from a distance, close up she’s a real mess. Age has taken its toll”
How embarrasing that could be!

Do any of you know of more things you can or shouldn’t say on a typical Y-meeting?

Greetings,

Willem

Not all MG models started at 251 prior to the MGB, all the 'BMC models began at 5001, such as the 1100-1300, Mk3 & Mk4 Magnette, ect.
Funny how people 'forget' those saloon MG models, even though the 1100-1300 was the largest production of ANY MG, beating the MG Metro.

Neil,
To add to your list of other MG models that did not commence with 251, the MGTF (the '54 version) which began with chassis number 501. The first production MGA Twin Cam chassis was also 501.

"My Y has a large hole in it's tail pipe. I really need to get it looked at. It's very loud while running."

(It really does!)
