MG MG Y Type - Tie rod bushes

Can anyone advise where or what to use for replacing the rubber bushes on the rear chassis tie rod, see image copied from another thread. There are 4 all together, quite large, (2 on each side of the rod) any help here? Haven't been able to track some down. Not quite sure what to use? Thanks

I Jones

I purchased a set of 4 from NTG Services tel in UK 01473 406031 e-mail sales@ntgservies.co.uk

I echo Bryan's comments. NTG are your only hope, but a certain one as I know they stock them. Part number is R861 I think but if you ask for either Paul Banyard or Mike Smith and tell them you want a bush set and washers for the MG YA/YT Panhard Rod, they will be able to sort you out.

Before you order, check that you can get your bolts out easily. If you cant you will probably wreck them when you do. NTG also do the bolts. If you cannot get them out, ensure the petrol tank is OFF the car and then use a butaine blow torch to heat them to cherry red and then they should come undone. You will need someone else to hold the Panhard Rod though with a set of Vice Grips to turn against you. It a good idea (if you can get a third person) to add additional negative turn force on the Rod by sliding the appropriate Whitworth Spanner/Wrench over the Squared end of the Rod too.

Thank you for the tip Bryan ! will do, cheers. And Paul too haven't found the cap yet but you have a good point, which I forgot about. Yes I would like to come back if I find one and haven't anything in my garage that will do the trick, many thanks !!

Hello Ian
I don't have you on the Swiss MG Car Club's Y register. Please contact me for details.

I recently got some rubber bushes from NTG for the Panhard rod of the Y/T I'm working on. I think they are from a MOOG brand strut rod, or sway bar bushing set for American cars from the 1970's. Spend a little time looking through an illustrated suspension parts catalogue and you will find them. Basically, a 1" LTB piece of rubber with a 1/2" bore. (L.T.B. = Length Through Bore)
Also, the rubber booties for the front bumper supports are exactly the same as those for an MGA.

Many years ago shortly after I acquired my 49 YT I replaced these "booties". At that time (1960s) I found that one (MGA I believe) was larger in diameter where if fits to the body than what was the original on the car. Would be interesting to find out if my memory is experiencing a "senior moment" or whether there really was a difference. The saving grace is that no one today will ever be able to tell the difference.

Larry,
Check the NTG catalogue-I think the same part number is listed for the Y and MGA bumper booties.
