MG MG Y Type - Trafficators

I have a pair of Lucas SF 80 trafficators on my YB and no matter how much I clean them up they are always slow to rise up particularly on the passenger size - any ideas what to do?

Is there a source for these at a reasonable price second hand.
David Mullen

Replace all the wiring connected to the trafficators.

The wiring is probably original through the roof and has probably started to corrode internally increasing the electrical resistance - hence, slow response.

To test the trafficators - try them on the bench with a spare battery - if they work fast - it's the wiring, slow it's the trafficators.

Also remember that the power supply is only half the system. If the trafficators are not earthed properly to the body and the body is not well earthed to the battery - you will have problems.

If you do run new wires to the trafficators, make them twin core to convert them to flashing. Data sheet avail from register.

I had the same problem with a brand new wire loom. In the end I bought a brand new set (of SF40s) and this overcame the problem. I think the solenoid had perished or at least the insulation between the windings soit was shorting out and therefore the solenoid was too weak.

They are quite cheap to purchase from some of the electrics suppliers on the links page on the website.

Thanks - will have a look at the wiring and conections again but if no luck will have to replace them as Paul did.

Managed to get one working fine after changing the bullet connector which was corroded - the other one is still very slow even when swapped to the side that's now working well. I narowly missed some SF80s on ebay so may see if a local auto electrician will have a quick look but will probably need a new / refurbished one - they seem to be getting rare these days in good condition.

SF40s are correct for the majority of Ys - SF 80s were only used on the late YBs and Magnettes David.

I have used an airosol, solvosol switch cleaning spray which came with a long thin push in tube to get onto the moving part of the solenoid then sqirted it as the arm is raised and lowered. it appears to remove any congeeled grease and corrosion, and I still have them working.
