MG MG Y Type - TRAVELLING IN SPAIN IN A TA IN SEPTEMBER 2008

Dear All

This is a personal rather than event related request.
Whilst not specifically a Y related topic I guess that some of you may have had experiences of travelling in Spain if not in a Y then maybe in a classic car MG or otherwise!
Jo and I are travelling to Spain this September by way of Santander to Alicante. If any fellow travellers are en route between August 30 and September 14 then please let us know.

We are also keen to hear any experiences, places to visit, car related events, good restaurants and places to stay en route. We are staying with friends around Alicante.

So any thoughts, advice and assistance would be very much appreciated.

Sincerely

Jerry and Jo Birkbeck

From personal rallying experience in Northern Spain - if you are going in the TC go either naked soaked in Rainex, or wear a plastic bag - it rains a lot in Northern Spain ... like you wouldnt believe. The storms coming in off the Atlantic are huge.

I would also strongly suggest that you look at the list in Hints and Tips - there is one there as to what spares to carry. Best value - travel insurance including free recovery of your car back home and hire of a car for the remainder of the duration of your vacation.

Finally, once you get over the coastal mountains and into the interior plains, was off all the Rainex, plenty of factor 32 sun cream, long sleved cotton shirts and pants, a sun hat, and lots of water - not alcohol or coffee or other diuretics.

Sorry - not Hints and Tips, it is in Technical Advice "Spares to carry with you"

Thanks Paul very useful information.
We have travelled in the T type in France and Germany on a number of occasions but not as far south as Spain.

Hello Jerry.
Pat and I drove to Portugal last Septemeber to a small village just outside Lagos called Burgau. in the MGF not a Y.
Our route from the port took us through the Picos De Europa region, if you have time on your way down its a must to take in.
We pre booked our hotels both going and coming back through Spain using the state run Parodors, superb.
If you look up Keytel International they have a great website and if you are over 60 you just might obtain some discount using their Golden Days offers.

Our first hotel was in Leon. The Parador San Marcos, It was fantastic, Our journey took us about 5 to 6 hours via the Picos to the first hotel with lots of hill climbs, the scenery was spectacular but the route was demanding even for a modern car.

It had been some years since we travelled to Santander by ferry and we found it extremely busy this time, my advise is to follow the motorway signs as soon as you get off the dock to get you quickly away from the port we followed signs for Oviedo once on the motorway it gives you time to relax a little.

The petrol was about 67p a litre as against ours at the time of around 94p a litre a little bit more expensive in Portugal.
Make sure you take the recommended parts, warning triangles (2), and high vis jackets.
The police are pretty hot on Sundays stopping you just to make sure youve not had a drink.

The directions to most of the hotels we booked were very good but perhaps sometimes a european sat nav would be useful in town centres.
We drove around 2500 miles door to door and had a great time.
As we were waiting at the dock to come home over 100 classic cars came off on an organised MSA rally they were making their way to Lisbon.
I'm sure you will have a great time.

Many thanks Mal
Some very, very useful advice especially the hotel chain. As a TOG I hopefully will be able to get into the 60+ thingy when booking a hotel! Jo of course is far younger than me!

Sincerely
