MG MG Y Type - Viton Crankshaft Oil Seal - Front

Having had the cylinders on my YT re-lined, new std pistons fitted + crankshaft re-ground and new bearings fitted, I am now in the process of re-installing timing chain etc. Have purchased a Viton front oil seal from MGOCC spares, I am assuming it is placed with the open 'lip' and spring facing the timing chain. I would appreciate if someone who has installed this seal could let me know the correct procedure.

Many thanks

Hi Anil,
That's correct. Think of it this way...by placing the spring facing the engine, the oil from the engine keeps the spring from rusting too. I also used the blue RTV Silicone on the outside of the seal to give further sealing (precautionary). Be careful when sliding in the seal over the shaft (a smear of engine oil helps slide it easier).
Good luck.

Thanks Andrew.

Can I assume the seal is installed in the groove of the timing chain cover and sump, when the sump is secured to the block and the the crank pulley is then slid in? When you say shaft, do you mean the crank pulley boss?

Best wishes

The seal is fitted with the spring inwards, some I have found do not have the spring, but to make sure check with the supplier. I set my seal in the groove used for the old rope insert. First the sump must be removed and the seal groove cleaned, the seal is then bedded in the timing cover in silicone jointing compound and the cover fitted into position, and then the pulley fitted to align the seal. Compound is put into the sump groove and bolted up so that the seal slides into place. This I did before the timing cover compound set, then leave for a day or so to allow the compound to set. I have found that the seal is 100% oil tight and worth the effort. Bryan

Hi Bryan

many thanks for your tips. I shall proceed with fitting the Viton seal now.

All the best

When I fitted this seal I found that it would not quite fit in the sump channel diameter and was advised by B&G that they eased the side of the channel in the sump with a file to allow it to slot in and not distort. The old rope seal did not require a true circle. I did this, used the silicon and had no problems.
