MG MG Y Type - Watertight?

How watertight should a '53 YB be? I washed my new car today and found water had entered through the front of the sunroof and the boot lid. The boot seal looks pretty flat so I'm sure that needs replacing. I noticed clotch seals on the windows... are those water tight by any means or should I expect water inside the doors? Thanks!
Steve Simmons

Steve, check the drain pipes which run from the rim around the roof opening and come out below the car around the joint of the front fender/running board. As to the boot lid, a problem area, however, NTG is great on the rubber bits to correct most of the related issues.

You may have just overflowed the sunroof gutters(if you used a hosepipe).Try and pore some water around the sunroof to see if it comes out of the drains above the back wheels and the front of the sills they may by blocked. The doors have holes in the bottom to let the water out!

Dos and Dont of Y Type ownership.

Do close all windows (including front screen, doors, SWC, boot (trunk) lid battery compartment, and bonnet (hood) before commencing washing the car.

Dont use a hose pipe or, worse still, a car wash!

Dont go out in the rain!!

Do empty out the SWC after being out in the wet. Water ingress into the SWC and boot/trunk area is common place - ensure that you get it out as that is why the floor rots out and the rear chassis members with it!

Welcome to the wonderfully wet world of Y owner"ship". When you are out in the rain for the first time, it will come in around the front screen, around the front doors, and through the floor when you go through a big puddle - all part of the learning curve, so cheer up!!

Have a bundle of fun in your new toy Steve,

Happy MotorinG

PS - Still awaiting an entry for Ys on Parade!
Paul Barrow

I will certainly get to the Y's on Parade but I want to wait until I get some really nice photos.

I'm assuming the SWC is the spare wheel compartment? Sorry, I'm very new to this type of car.

My battery compartment does not have a lid. It's only a box with the cloth strap around the battery for lifting out. Where can I find a lid, preferably an original? Are they hard to find? Also I assume it's vented, correct? Seems like a bad idea to fully seal a battery in a box!

Thanks for all the info. Makes it much easier to learn this car!
Steve Simmons

Sorry Steve, it is not vented. Just a flat bit with tabs for the clips at the ends of the battery box. Looks like a T-Series cover, but not hinged. A decent photo will do. Can always update later.

Actually the car is already on the site. The previous owner was Peter McKercher of Ottawa, Canada. I'll have to find out if I need to replace his entry or just edit the info. There's some interesting history on the car that should be included in there if it's allowed. I will also have the car added to my MG pages on my personal site soon.

Welcome to the wonderfully wet world of Y owner"ship"?

Great....! I will NOT show this comment to my wife who was hoping that a closed car resisted rain better than our MGB....
Willem van der Veer

Let me know how you want the entry changed Steve and I'll do it. Easiest way - email me.

I can probably fabricate one out of sheet metal if I can find one to measure. Wish me luck!
