MG MG Y Type - What's a YB

Hi All,

Please excuse my ignorance.
I consider myself a lover of ALL MG's. I've owned in excess of 300 MG's of various models from TD's to A's to B's. I still provide service, repairs and restoration services to many different MG owners, but I admit to the fact that I don't have a clue as to what an MG YB even looks like.
Maybe it's because I'm a colonial (Canadian) and they were never exported to the western colonies, or maybe I've just led an extremely sheltered life.
Whatever the cause of my ignorance, I've finally decided to take the plunge, display my ignorance publicly, and ask the advice of people "in the know".

Any help (particularly photos or drawings) in upgrading my d sadly lacking knowledge, would be most greatfully appreciated. There: I've done it!!!!!

Kind regards,

JR

Don't feel bad, most people have never heard of a Y-Type even if they are quite familiar with MGs in general.

I suggest you visit http://www.mgytypes.org/ for all the information you will ever want.

Dont worry about it - at least you know you are missing something! Most MG "fans" have never heard of them either. Like Steve, I hadn't until I saw a YA for sale, and fell in love with it. My wife probably summed it up when I told her about my find - she said "Two things: 1) What's an MG Y Type, and 2) you are not having it!" Well, a YA and 2 YTs later ... and I have to say what a wonderful bunch of people I have found Y owners to be ... THE WORLD OVER!

All I can say is "Come and join in the fun!".

Steve has given you the best way to find out information, but nothing will prepare you for a ride in one. They are captivating!

Paul

PS I also have an MG ZT-T, an MGB ('63) and a ZA ('55) which I also enjoy too.

Hold, hold on - Just wait one cotton-pickin' minute here.
Surely we are all missing the most important matter in hand. The question on everyone's lips MUST be:

"Did the '0' key bounce or has RJ really, personally owned in excess of 300 MG's?"

Cripes.

Cheers,
Saul.
Saul

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the advice and info. I shall now be better able to sleep night, now that I have an answer to my question.

To Saul: No, your eyesight is not failing. My first car, purchased when I was a mere sprout of fifteen years (well over 40 years ago) was a 1956 MG Magnette. It started a love affair that still exists, and burns brightly in me today. You will note that I said I've owned "in excess of 300 MG's". Of those, I've only owned, and driven as personal vehicles, about 150. The others were purchased either to resell or dismantle for spare parts. There was a time (about 25 years ago) when I had more spares in stock than the local British-Leyland dealer had.

Now knowing what a "Y" model is, I think I'll have to try and find one for myself. It appears as though it was the "big brother" of the Magnette. If that's true, it must be a pure joy to own and drive one.

Bigger brother, maybe older brother would be a better euphamism!! Some folk say to me 'which is your favorite MG?' and I usually respond by asking if they have children. If affirmative in response I then ask them 'which is their favorite?'. I then explain that MGs, like children, are all different and you like them all the same, for their different reasons! So why do I do so much for the Y - simple, there is plenty already done for the other MGs by others already! JR - GO FOR IT, I can put you in touch with another Y owner in Ontario if you like.

Saul
FYI - 'cotton pickin' - you are about 3,000 - 4,000 miles off LOL!! As a former dealer in cars, it is perfectly possible.

Hi All (but mainly Paul)

You are correct about Saul's geography, but incorrect about my previous occupation. True, I've spent the best part of Fourty years in the automobile business, but have NEVER sold cars for a living. I would be much thinner than I am now, and probably very depressed at what a failure I had been, had I chosen that as a career.
After obtaining my mechanics license, back when they were produced with a quill pen and written on parchment, I chose to follow the Parts and Service management path (please read grey hair and ulcers). I did work at some dealerships in a service management role, but never for a British car company. I actually spent many years as the Vice-President of technical services for the company in Canada that was responsible for the importation and distribution of the Lada automobiles which were born in Russia.

All of my working career was spent defending my choice of driving an MG over the product supplied by my employer, but it was a battle that I enjoyed, and in my mind, couldn't lose.

I loved the analogy of choosing which child was loved more. It is a perfect description of the affliction most of the "Safety Fast" crowd suffers from.

Hi JR

Sounds to me like you will fit in with Y people splendidly. Hope you get in touch with Frank - who I have been in touch with for many years, he will be able to induct you well, and we look forward to hearing that you have bought a Y yourself (I know where there is a nice one here is WA USA - not mine)and are starting the Ontario chapter up with Frank!

Have a lot of fun,

Paul

I still get people in the UK telling me what a nice 'RILEY' I have.
