MG MG Y Type - wheel-brace and starting handle

Grateful to know whether anyone can advise what other models had the same wheel-brace as the YB and the same starting-handle so I can widen the search for these missing items

The Y-register has the spare wheel clamp if that's what you mean?

Thanks but I have already obtained the spare wheel clamp from the Y Register. What I'm after now is the YB wheel-brace to undo the wheel nuts and the starting handle to start the engine (should one ever need that)

I believe that the Octagon Car Club had a couple of new Starting Handles at Beaulieu. They do not appear on their current Spares List but it might be worth e-mailing them to see if they have any left.

Good luck.

David.

NTG sell starting handles - P/n X209. I have a spare wheel brace ... somewhere I think. Similar to the one in the picture in the Y/YT handbook (the YB handbook doesnt have a picture), but the Y/YT picture is for illustration purposes only - dont think they actually were that fussy about what they put in the SWC!

I am sure that you are aware that YB had a different wheelbrace to the YA/YT. I attach a copy of page 26 of the YB Operations Manual showing the wheelbrace. I did buy a spare at an autojumble once but found that the wheelnut size was different to the YB/TD. It would therefore appear that the style was not unique to the YB but you will need to check it fits the wheelnuts.

Thanks very much David and Paul for helpful advice. Will try NTG and Octagon for starting handle. Yes, David, I was aware that the YB wheel-brace was shaped as in your illustration and therefore different from YA/YT. I kept my eye open at Beaulieu without success though one would haved thought such a common tool would be easy to find - I took a wheel-nut to make sure same size but no wheel brace. Will keep trying but thanks for help

Geoffrey, the wheel brace (lug wrench) I have listed on eBay, item 29018059271, fits the lug nuts on my 53 YB, and looks the same as the one in the picture, except for the "step down" as opposed to the tapered one in the picture. Hope this helps. Larry

I am not sure whether the starting handle is the same for Y's as TA-C, or TD/TF. I notice in the Octagon Catalogue they quote a price £28 inc Vat for the parts and include it under TA/TC/Y.

Moss who only mention T Type parts have the part NI386-140 @ £32.95 (which I think includes Vat).

NTG cross reference the part with TD/TF and the number is X209TD and works out @ £38.27 ( I am not sure whether this includes VAT). Part X209 @ around £34.00 is mentioned specifically as for TA-TC.

The only way is to check it out. If you like I can arrange to see Richard Dick sometime next week.He has a YB and can see if mine works or not.I purchased mine from Octagon.

I would have thought that Neil Cairns has the definitive word on this topic.

Just tried to look up your eBay listing and the number (cut and pasted into the search box) gave zero results. Did find your listing under item 280180592791

The other listing, 140109210678, looks a lot like the original in my YT.

Sorry about the wrong number.
Larry, the listing you showed is like the wheel brace in my YB, except for the fact mine has a pry bar end for removing the hubcap on the end opposite the lug nut end. Guess they used more than one kind. Thanks. Larry

Forgot about that picture! I was referring to a picture of all the tools as in the Y/YT one! The YB one looks very similar to the Magnette ZA one but I dont know about nut size.

Renewed thanks for advice and offers of help. NTG told me out of stock of starting handles so have been on their waiting list for months. To-day still out of stock but hey presto they found just one with my name on it! They assure me fits Y as well as TD so am getting that. Watching wheel-brace on ebay.

Also watch "Wheel brace", "Wheel wrench", "Lug nut spanner","Lug nut wrench" and "wheel nut wrech" as Exact phrases. Check out items Worldwide not just UK on your searches too. I did this when looking earlier and was succesful.

Good luck,

Paul
