MG MG Y Type - Wheels for the Y(A)

I was wondering if anyone knew of another slightly wider wheel that might fit the stud pattern of an early Y, even a 15" wheel to which I might fit a higher profile tyre. All suggestions greatly appreciated.

There is a much travelled YT fitted with 16" AU Falcon rims in Melbourne. Some adjustment to the stud pattern was required.

I will send the owner an email about this thread.

Rob is new to the BBS, so can't post as yet, so he forwarded this to me for posting on his behalf. Four photos to follow.

"I can’t claim originality for the idea but have maybe improved on it. 10 years ago I was alerted to the coincidence of the Ford Falcon AU wheel being within <2mm of the Y-type 5 stud radius. I worked out that replacing the Y’s ¼” studs with standard 3/8” studs fixed that.

The next issue is that the Ford AU 16” wheels are 7” wide. Far too wide for a Y. But slicing 2” out of the inner rim (in the flat part of the wheel) fixed that with a perfect offset.

I sourced 4 good wheels from a Ford wrecker. I then got a specialist wheel engineering shop in Heidelberg West (in Melbourne, can’t recall the company name) to cut down the wheels and TIG weld the pieces back together. They did a great job, rebalancing the wheels before handing them back. At home I drilled & tapped posts for the hub caps then spray painted the wheels to match the car. The Y-type chrome garnish fitted straight on, including the hub caps.

My wheels differ from standard in having the holes drilled in them, but they don’t look out of place. Being heavier & wider, and with 185/75R16 Toyo radials fitted, the handling is very good. I run tubeless too.

There’s one original wheel & tyre in the spare compartment as my classic “space-saver” spare. In 10 years, I’ve never used it. And over 10 years the modified wheels and tyres have performed very well with no problems arising.

As a final note, because I didn’t cannibalise my Y wheels to make a hybrid wheel, I have the original set-up stored away if I ever want to be period-perfect again. Not sure why I would though.

Cheers,

Rob"

Thanks guys for that, when Tony mentioned the AU wheels I went and checked a set of 15" EL wheels I have, and yes the stud pattern is within a bee's diaphragm of fitting perfectly likewise a set of Mitsubishi L300 wheels so the options open up. Thanks again for the inspiration.

Thanks for posting that Tony.

I've looked at my files and it was Neway Wheels that did the width reduction for me.
