MG MG Y Type - which regulator/control box

I was offered two voltage regulators /) with the following numbers on it:
a new old stock RB 106-2 37 82 L 12V 2 54 (originaly for an '59/'61 Humber Hawk/Super Snipe)
an used RB 106/1 12 V 60 A 9 68 (originaly for an '55/'56 Humber Hawk)

Would they fit (maybe with small modification) on my YA Y5888?

I know that the later YB uses the RB. 106/1 and the now fitted regulator on Y5888 is also a "modern" narrower 5 post Lucas regulator with sliding connectors in stead of screws.

It all depends on what dynamo you have on the Y. YAs, YTs and up to YB 0326 should have the earlier RF.95/2 control box with a C.39PV dynamo. YB 0327 on should have RB.106/1 with a C.39PV-2 dynamo. Personally I would not recommend fitting the wrong one. I have heard of several cars catching fire because of the wrong or badly set control boxes.

Paul,

Thanks for your comments. My YA is fitted with a newer type dynamo as on early MGB's etc.(I forgot to write down the number) and the now fitted regulator is a "modern" RB. 106/1, so I think I can safely fit the used RB.106/1 (if it works).

Out of technical interest I'd like to find out what difference is between the RB106/1 and RB106/2. Would the 60 and 82 mean the regulated Amps?

Do you really answer internet questions in the middle of the night? Or is your computer time and/or biological clock connected to your Y-clock?

The answer to your second question is easier than the first, and it is yes - I was up at that time this morning - it is part of the service!

Answer to your first question, I haven't got a clue - also part of the service!!

Happy searching!

To follow up Paul’s posting on Dynamos fitted to Ys above LUCAS C45Y V-3 were fitted to all Y Types (Including Tourers) up to engine number XPAG/SC/16768. After this the smaller C39s were fitted. Also very early Ys, up to Y0584 had the RF91 Regulator, the forerunner of the RF95. The RF95 was also fitted in combination with the C45.

I have been trying without success to find a supplier of ‘Solid State’ Regulator conversions. They seem to be available for classic bikes but not cars. Does anyone have knowledge of a supplier?

David,

Try these articles on the web:

The author is playing with the idea of fitting a Bosch regulator on his MGA

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/rhodes/generator.html
very detailed description of conventional regulaters etc.

http://www.mztech.fsnet.co.uk/mods/mod_12vreg.html
describes the fitting of an Lucas NCB403 electronic regulator from a Volvo!

Especially the last item sounds interesting, let me know if you try it.
I don't need another regulator immediately anymore; during a test-drive to warm up the engine prior to valve-adjustment, suddenly the ammeter read positive!
I had to stop the car to wipe away the tears of sheer happiness.... Goes to show that cars ARE sensitive to TLC and know when to say thank you.

Thanks for the links they are most interesting. My desired solution is to retain the body from the RF95 and transplant the electronics into the body. Therefore from the outside it should be transparent that the Regulator is not mechanical. I wouldn't like the car to look non-original.

If anybody else is interested in such a solution please e-mail me and I will investigate the costs of such a conversion.

Regards.

David.
