Abingdon Spares do a good range of Whitworth stuff - check out their website from the Link on our Links Page Marvin.

Go to the T-ABC page here. There is a post by Derek Nicholson with a link to a supplier of BSF(Whitworth)in the US. Range looks good and also prices.Be wary of buying Whitworth tap and die sets on Ebay usually from New Zealand and promoted for British cars. Our cars use BSF and BA threads and taps and dies for Whiworth threads are useless. Terry

Marvin, if you can find the basic sizes of Whitworth spanner (say 1/4" to 3/4") at autojumbles or similar they should cover most of the basic tasks. You won't need to buy a new toolbox!

Further to Terry's comment, do remember that the engine and ancillaries don't use BSF or BA threads, but MM threads - the early metric forms inherited from (I think) Hotchkiss machinery that Morris "imported" from France after WW1. The metric thread is combined with Whitworth heads... which over the years has led to a good few stripped threads and bad language. This practice only ended once BMC components replaced the Morris-based equivalents when the TF gave way to the MGA in 1955.

So the question that begs to be asked is... where can one find a chart of all the threads and their locations on Y-Types and/or XPAG drivetrains? If one doesn't exist, perhaps those 'in the know' can whip something out? I would gladly pay for such a chart to be made!

Go to >www.mg-tabc.org/ < Under Technology you will find all the engine gearbox nuts and bolts compiled by David Dubois who from time to time frequents this BBS. I made a list of all TC body bolts and it is there, unfortunatley I didn't make a list for the YT when I last had it apart maybe because my memory was better then. In any event the YT is much more straight forward than a TC. Terry

Thank you! I'm suprised I never noticed it there.

To all who would like a listing of all the fasteners used in the XPAG engines, send me an e-mail and I'll send you the list, plus a couple of other lists that I have made up over the years. Unfortunately, I don't have a list of chassis fasteners for the Y Types.

Marvin - Look in the Moss catalog for the 7 piece set of Whitworth wrenches, then go to British Tool Company at: http://www.britishtool.com/index.htm and British Tools & fasteners at: http://www.britishfasteners.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvcat: and get the sizes from where ever the price is cheapest. Get both a set of combination wrenches and a set of sockets. the 7 piece doesn't cover everything, but will handle 90% or better of whatever you need. You might also get a 2BA and a 4BA open end wrenches to take care of all the instrument work that you may need to do. The above listed places also carry taps and dies and re-coil (same as Helicoil) kits for all BSF sizes. I would recommend a set of taps and dies in 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8 BSF and then fill out the rest on an as needed basis. The engine fasteners as Terry stated are metric threads with Whitworth heads. Here is an area where you should have a set of taps and dies in the following sizes: 6 X 1mm, 8 X 1mm, 10 X 1.5mm and 12 X 1.5mm (note: these are an old French standard metric rather than the ISO metric that is common today. These sizes are still available as a metric fine thread and can be found as a lot of auto parts stores). The metric taps are quite important for chasing damaged threads in the engine block. David's lists are also downloadable from the Technical Centre / Technical Data page on www.mgytypes.org.

Paul - Wrenches? Good grief, a couple of years in the colonies and you have forgotten the correct terms?

I had forgotten that you had put all that information on teh Y Type web site. It is much easier to send people there than to send a bunch of attachments - thanks.
