MG MG Y Type - windscreen to body seal

having completed the recovering of the dash and windscreen surround wood I am preparing to reinstall it all. I am now puzzled about how the windscreen seal fits to the bodywork. Originally the seal was sandwiched between the wood strip and the aperture with the fixing screws going though the seal (twice) and bodywork before entering the wood. Is this correct as the seal can cause the wood to tilt out of position and the extra thickness of the seal pushes it backwards making it more difficult to line up the rest of the wood surround. Have I perhaps got the wrong seal or is something else going on here?

Hello Ian,
There is no "seal" between the dash log and the body frame, only a section of Rexine rolled over a 1/8" bead. Same for the 2 side timbers. These are more of an anti-rattle and gap filler in my opinion and perform no sealing function as such.

The windscreen seal is fitted to the screen itself.

You should fit the windscreen and it's seal before you install the timber work and hood lining, to ensure the seal applies enough pressure to the steelwork to keep out the rain. Then fit the hood lining & timber work without pushing the screen away from the body.

I'll endeavour to find some photos to explain.

Cheers

thanks Tony. I thought it was wrong the way it was. A couple of photos would help especially as I have no seal on the windscreen itself. I now need to know what that looks like.

Thanks to both of you for the help to understand my problem. It would seem that as long as I have had the car it has had an extra seal which was presumably fitted by some previous owner. I attach a photo. What I have to do now is decide to improve this setup somehow or risk the probable leaks if I decide to return it to original.

Go with the original Ian. MG Ys fit where they touch, and leak where they don't. Wet legs is part of the experience - haha!

Hello
taken off the body, striped down to the last bolt
also i had a rubber and silicon around the window,
the seal on the window itseldf was ok
so as i understand
there is no rubbert on the body around the window
if you took off the window before

both pipes at the end of the water line in the roof in the back was rotten off
so i know why most mg ya has rust in the back of the car
when you open the back door the water come down from the roof.

i have to make it new.

so what is the right way to make it dry

i can make pictures from the body without any parts on it

sorry for the horrible english, most written by myself, but checked with a translator.

Franz, The only way to make it dry as you say, is by careful trial and error adjustment of the hinges. There is a slotted screw hole in the hinge that allows this. If the hinge is set too lose the bottom will be tight when closed but the top will let water through. Very difficult to achieve most cars suffer from wet knee syndrome.

Hello
nobody some good pictures from the frame and the body
difficult to find original pictures in the web.

There is only a rubber on the chromed frame?
no rubber on the body of the car
