MG MG Y Type - Windtone Horns

Hello, Can anyone tell me how to fit windtone horns under the headlamps ? a diagramor picture would be excellent!
Many thanks in advance

A number of articles from the 50s show this arrangement - although not a close up of the fitting details. One of the reprinted articles 'Going North' from 1953 shows this. Possibly Dave Lawrence's book might have something in it?

There isn't anything in Let there be Ys on this. Standard fitting place for these was on the firewall and that is covered. This would be a personal preference thing with custom brackets.

I had a YB in the 1970s (I am currently looking for another Y) and I fitted horns on the headlamp support bar, using clamp brackets that I acquired with the horns. The attached picture shows the front of the car around 1971. The quality may be relatively poor; it was digitised from an old colour slide.

Hi Ian,

I have YT EXR 2618 [see YT's on parde on the MGCC Y type site] with chrome wintone horns mounted on the front.

The brackets I made to fit these is very easy to fabricate and fits directly onto the bottom of the headlamp fixing thread & nut [so no drilling/butchering required]

The bracket consists of 1/4 inch thich plate 1 1/2 inches wide bent into a dog leg shape then it is just a matter of drilling the bracket to suit ... and in my case getting it chromed.

See attached sketch for dimensions - obviously when you round the sharp corner of the bracket away the brackets become left & right handed.

If you make brackets to these dimensions you will find the positioning will be perfect and allow the correct positioning of the original fog lamp etc

Hope this is what you are looking for?

Do you know where UMG 780 is now? It looked good in the photo back in 70s?

I wish I could trace UMG 780. Unfortunately, the last time that I saw it, it did not look like the photo. I sold it to my brother, who 'customised' it with a psychedelic (spelling?) paint job. He later sold it on to someone else, who had a barn full of old cars to be restored. Both my brother and the new owner died some time ago, and I have not been able to find out what happened to the cars. They may well still be in a barn somewhere. I have some outstanding enquiries, but no real leads so far.

UMG 780 is not listed on the DVLA database sadly. I wonder if it was ever known on John Lawson's lists.

If you would like them mounted as per my YA5539. Not directly under the headlights though. We could send you dimensions of the brackets used.

Thank all of you for responding, the comments, pictures, diagrams are most helpful. Judging from many comments perhaps the best place is under bonnet? Shame to hide all the chrome though. At least I get the impression that it wasn't very common to place under the headlamps, judging from there never having been specific brackets for this purpose made by MG. thanks again to all, much appreciated.

Elise & Dick P, yes please, I would like to see the dimensions of the brackets you have used diagram or picture too?). Gathering all ideas is always useful as you never know how it ends up in the end. Thanks, Ian

Hello Dave
How do you go about checking the DVLA database.

Go to DVLC website and then to tax vehicle online - it gives access to vehicle enquiry facility where you put in reg no and make (MG).

Hello Ian
our apologies for not getting back to the site, totally forgot about it. Dick has drawn the sketch, which I could fax or email to you, if you let me know which you prefer. Email me elisepakeman@bigpond.com

Hi Mike

Your pic shows just how good chrome windtone horns look when mounted beneath the headlamps. My first YA (JGD 208)had horns mounted in this fashion. However, they were not in brilliant condition. When I owned YA RVW 761
(which is featured on 'Y's on Parade') I was very keen to purchase a pair and fit them exactly as your photo. However, when ever a pair came up it was always when I was short of cash!

I wonder if you could confirm where the photograph was taken? It looks very much like the entrance to Newbold Comyn in Leamington Spa, where I live.

All the best

Sincerely
