MG MG Y Type - wing piping

Hi All
Just looking for confirmation really.
When I stripped the car the only piping I found was on the rear wings .
It was made of plastic and the bead was about 6mm dia. Is that correct for a YA?
Also I have seen finished cars with the piping running from the front, over the front wing, along the running board and stopping at the rear end of the running board. The rear wing piping coming from the rear, over the rear wing and turning to go along the little rear edge of the running board.
I have also seen it with the front section of piping turning along the rear edge of the running board and the rear piping stopping where it reaches the running board.
Which is correct?
Thanks as always for your thoughts .

Piping goes from the front valence panel/outer wing along the top of the inner wing, down, along the running board body and out to the outside back of the running board against the rear wing. A second piece then ran up over the rear wing and body line. A large piece of black rubber filled the gap between the front of the running board/back side of the front wing.

The correct size piping is available from NTG/MGBits.com.

The piping is body coloured.

This was common to Y, Y/T and YB.

Hope that helps you John.

Thats super stuff thank you Paul. I assume it is plastic so will it benefit from a bit of warming to follow the bend at the rear end of the running board, or is it nicely flexible when new ? The bits I found were really hard and rigid after 65 years ......made me quite envious!

Hi, If you get a roll from the Octagon club it is 9 yards long which will not do the job Short by about 5 feet ( 1.5 meters) Ask me how I know... HAHA... BOB WOOD Queensland Australia

John,

I don't know what your exterior paint color will be, but you may want to investigate having your local upholstery shop fabricate some wing piping for you.

YB0952 is finished in silver streak gray. None of the usual MG T/Y part suppliers stocked piping in this color.

I took a painted body panel to my local upholstery shop. They found a marine vinyl fabric to match the color and fabricated piping using 1/4" diameter fabric cord. 30+ years on it is still flexible, intact and a perfect color match to the painted body panels. All of the modern silicone based car finish polishes I have used are compatible with the vinyl fabric.

I suspect solid extruded pvc piping was NOT original to Y Types. Nor was it painted to match after the wings were fitted to the central body.

BTW, my local upholstery shop charged me a fraction of the price of the MG part suppliers. They were also thrilled to learn they were helping "Maintaining the Breed.".

Thanks Rocky. I had wondered how original my old piping was but I have no way of knowing. The body is Black so is easily matched but I wondered if the plastic piping would lose its surface finish in the weather . Then I thought about leather cloth , then I thought about red to match the interior and contrast with the paint. So I am going around in circles at moment. Leaning towards black as per original.

John,

Please go with black. Red would look like the lipstick of a French woman of the night!

Ha Ha, now I am not familiar with the lipstick of any French woman ......sadly. I was thinking darker red and not bright red but I must admit that body colour as per original has won .So black it is .

If you went with red you could put MAG wheels and low profile tyres to finish it off HAHA BOB WOOD

But we digress...
