MG MG Y Type - XRN ENGINEERING

Have any of you guys used XRN ENGINEERING as a source for pistons in the County brand? If so are they manufactured in the UK?

I am having an XPAG engine rebuilt and I can get parts from XRN. Your advice and guidance would be very helpful.

Sincerely

Yes, when my YB engine was rebuilt had pistons supplied by XRN. Not sure their origin of manufactor. Have you asked them?

If you use County pistons (like I did) please carefully check if the distance between the top of the piston and the gudgeon (or wrist)pin is the same as the old piston (unlike I did).

My (eBay sourced) pistons were too high and I only discovered that (too late) when the block was fully assembled. I've heard of other XPAG pistons with the same problem, so, again, please check before assembly.
The best way would be to slide in the pin halfway up the old piston and then slide on the new piston. Comparing the two heights will be easy that way.

Attached is a picture of the pistons, showing them proud of the cylinder block, when they should be level with it. They would have touched the cylinder head at speed; not good.
I solved it temporarily with two head gaskets and will be fitting a thicker, solid copper gasket in the winter.

But the block in the photo has been skimmed, possibly more than once.

I have just measured the vertical distance on an XPAG block from the face of the flange that contacts the sump gasket to the top of the block; it measures 270mm. I am fairly sure that the block has never been machined. I also think I have given this dimension before.

The block was indeed skimmed and maybe more then once, but the old pistons did not protude like this.

At first I too thought that the block had been skimmed excessively but then it would have been more than 1 mm and that didn't match the excellent track record and XPAG experience of the machinist.

Later I heard other people complaining about piston height (not specifically County related), so I thought it would be a worthwhile comment.

I appreciate your reply, but it might be useful to check the block height. In my block I cannot remember the pistons projecting, but it would have been much less that the chamfer, and not given any cause for concern.
