MG MG Y Type - Y Series Sunshine roof

Hello all, i'm new to this site and this is my first post so bare with me.

Can anyone help me out with some guidance on how to remove the sunroof on my YA, its a little bit stiff and could do with lubricating.

many thanks Don.

This is covered in the workshop manual..if you dont have one it's worth getting. They come up for sale on ebay now and then.
As for the sun-roof..locate the two small screws that secure the sliding mechanism at the front left and right hand sides of the sun roof (slightly move the cloth lining attached to the sun roof to access them) - once the screws are removed push the brackets out a bit and the sun roof should push up at the front. Move the sliding catches out of the way and using the sun roof handle push the sun roof forward and upwards - it will come out leaving the long flat rod (you will see it) behind. Take care not to scratch the car paint when you take the sun roof out.Refitting the sun roof is a reverse of taking it out. Be careful not to dirty the headlining when you do this and refit to the flat rod carefully and in the correct way. Whilst the sun roof is out clean the roof channels out and check the drain hoses etc. Pray that there are no rust holes in the channels or that any of the drain hoses are blocked.... If in doubt go and talk to another Y owner - there must be one not far from you. If you do lubricate (silicone grease maybe?)the flat rod do it sparingly otherwise you will stain the headlining.

Don,
You can obtain the Workshop Manuals on CD from the International Y-Type Website suplliers - YZ Products, or as Paul said, in a few days there will be some notes on the website to guide you through the process. Nothing too difficult - just takes time.

Hi Don,
have just renovated the sliding roof on my YD. A bit fiddly but like Tony says quite straight forward. If you would like some first hand photos of structure of rear side locators and my own experiences you can email direct on magnamick1215@live.co.uk

A YD is a new one on me....presume you mean YB! A word of warning about refitting a Y sunroof - be careful the sliding locators are indeed properly located ...its quite easy if they are not for the sun roof to fly off whilst you are driving the car - it nearly happened to me only I managed to grab the sun roof handle just in time!

Whoops! Just invented the YD. Must have had an overdose of T 'D's this week. Of course it should have been YB. The front sliders were a bit of a fiddle, but with a bit of patience and a plastic ruler have got sliding roof perfectly central and flush with roof. Fortunately the front slider felts were in good condition. The rear locators I replaced the original pads with leather held in with brass 6 BA screws and bolts, filed down flush. Works well and invisible both when roof panel open or closed so not a pride of ownership issue. Smoothed side runners with wet and dry, refinished then used petroleum jelly as lubricant. Operates smooth as silk now. To ensure no contact between roof and sliding panel, initial functional checks were carried out with a sheet of clean wallpaper backing paper between the two surfaces. Opening an inch at a time and ensuring no pinching or snagging by wiggling paper at each stage. No rattles and 100% leakproof as car was subject to torrential downpour or return from Lincolnshire Poacher Rally last weekend!
