MG MG Y Type - Y type door repair panels

I need to repair the bottom edge of all four doors on my YA, are there any recommendations how I should go about this, are there any good repair panels available?

In a word, no Richard. The carpet you can probably get from NTG as it was the same as the floor.

You are lucky in that there is a great upholsterer in Southampton - Paul Farmer(?) in Millbrook. Let me know if you need his details.

Could it be possible that Richard wants to repair the metal?

If so I think NTG also sell repair panels, but the ones I've seen are so rudimentary that any basic fabricator could make them himself.
Willem van der Veer

Willem you are correct, metal panels are my first need, I have seen the NTG ones on line and wondered the quality, has anybody used them?
Richard Verrill

Richard,

I cannot comment for the NTG door panels, but believe I'm correct in saying they are made by Sportscar metal works Mick Beakhouse as advertised on the links page of the International MGYTR.

In 2006/7 I had all four of my YB doors outer panels re-skinned from just below the fold about 2 inches below the door windows, this was done at a company called Vintage Cars.com. in Lymington, Hants. They needed the car body and doors to make the panels correct to fit to the car. This may have been a bit more expensive option but from my experience and having seen a few different cars restored, there are always lots of work to do with fitting the panels to the door where they never quite fit right, and still need some adjustment, therefore I do wonder how much you would actually save by buying panels rather than getting it fabricated to suit the exact contour of your particular doors.

Hi Richard, i made my own and that way the door gaps can be set exactly as you want to follow the sill contour, here is a picture, all seams were then welded, hope this helps Graham

having problems with pic but will try tonight to submit it, Graham

I know this may sound like sacrilege to a purist but if you get the door bottom lightly grit blasted (which is quite cheap to get done) you are better off brazing in small sections and grind back and fill...unless you have tons of money to spare it can work out very expensive to do properly particularly if you get a body shop to do it.
