MG MG Y Type - Y-type temperature sensor/sender

Can anyone confirm the thread size for the temperature sensor in the bypass pipe?
I think it's 1/2" BSP parrallel thread.
R Ades

There isn't one, or not originally at any rate. Therefore someone, a previous owner perhaps, must have fitted it so it could be anything. Your guess at 1/2 BSP is a reasonable possibility.
Good luck.

1/2" BSP is a fairly large thread, roughly .825" od -- is there a possibility that you can get at it and measure the outside diameter of the thread fairly accurately-
William Revit

So this isn't original?

My understanding was that MG briefly used electric temperature gauges with matching resistance-type senders (instead of capillary tubes) on early MG Y-types and some export TCs. These sensors were factory-installed in the steel bypass pipe (lower hose junction), not the head.

This fitting was threaded 1/2" BSP parallel, which was standard for Smiths electric sensors of that period.

I was hoping not to need to pull it out to measure the thread, before fabricating a new pipe fitting.

Robert,

100% not original. No idea. Sorry.

While it may be convenient to fit a sender in the bypass hose I am not convinced it is a good idea. A sender should ideally be where the highest temperature is. As the bypass hose only has limited flow after the thermostat opens, or even none depending on what arrangements are made in the absence of an original type thermostat, the temperature is bound to be less than that at the head.

Good discussion but I refer back to the update to Hints and Tips which we posted last month from Tony Slattery for Engine Guard - https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/hints&tips.shtml#Engine_temperature_sensor - I have bought 3 of these now - one for each of my Y, my Y/T and YB.
