MG MG Y Type - y type wiper switch

my y type is nearly all back together, i have just refitted the wiper arms and blades but i find the use of the switch on the wiper spindle very fustrating to operate so i am thinking of using the dash instrument light switch for wiper operation, what is your view to the original set up?
Graham Sharpe

Personally Graham I think it is querky things like this that make the MG Y such a fun car and set it apart from other cars.

Truly though, how often do you use the wipers? The blades themselves are pretty useless to be honest so I use RaineX on my windscreen/windshield and this virtually means I hardly, if ever, need to use the switch.

To me it would be like saying, cut off power to the semaphore arms (I also have flashing lights in the 1130 lamps and supplementary ones at the rear) or seal up the sun roof.

Don't do it would be my advice ... even if you were to make it a reversible fitting.

hi graham I to use rainx on my wind screen, its the bees knees. I would not bother with a switch it seems to me to be a lot of work for very little gain, like pPaul I very rarly use my wipers they are useless, get yourself some rainx then jobs a gooden you won,t need your wipers regards don

With a properly cleaned and lubricated wiper mechanism (including the motor) the (also thoroughly cleaned) switch should present no trouble.

Attached is a picture of the switch in the open position. The black conical ring on the shaft pushes the switch open. The metal arm that slides over the ring can be adjusted (bent) for the best operation.

The admittedly akward actuation of the wipers is one of the oddities that make the Y so endearing to me, so I'm with Paul and Don not to make a big thing of the wiper.

I have driven in the rain with the Y and found the wipers far from useless. So much so that, to compensate for the leaky rubbers, I sometimes wished they were fitted to the inside of the 'screen, too. :-(

I don't think it would work anyway as the wiper arms need to be at rest below the screen so that you can wind open the the screen. Once you move them onto the screen they come on automatically (with a little help)

Hi,
My YB has been with us since 61 and the wipers have never been a problem. the trouble with a separate switch is you will do a lot of damage if the scuttle parked wipers are accidently switched on wheelboxes and racks are not exactly growing on trees these days.
