MG MG Y Type - YA brakes

Just obtained a flying pass MOT for the YA and the tester commented on the brake performance which he said was equal to any modern disk brakes and for the hand brake better than modern, It was clear even to my observation that the car tried to climb of the rollers. It is reassuring that within the design performance of the car it can drop anchor well enough Bryan

Good to hear Bryan - I have always maintained that PROPERLY adjusted and maintained brakes on a Y/YT/YB are perfectly adequate!

Best wishes

For some time I have been unable to understand why some owners find the brakes poor and yet I have no problem. Well seeing the MOT test mechanic who I would estimate not to be without some considerable strength, and myself a regular cyclist and occasional half marathon runner the penny dropped. Not having brake servo didn't worry me, it never occurred that not everyone had a large right foot. I owe an apology

We all love and champion our Y types but lets be realistic. For a starter the YB has more efficient front brakes than the YA and I certainly would not put any money on a YA stopping in the same distance as a modern car of equal weight at 60 mph.
Peter Vielvoye

You are probably correct Peter but did not the original Autocar or was it Motor test report 1G deceleration. It really depends on road condition, surface, tyre loading and how much force can be applied by the driver. ABS, and braking from 60mph was not a MOT requirement. I can claim however that in the past to have subjected my YA to the most challenging of conditions. I would have thought that a servo would be a good addition and improvement of the rather feeble dampers. In my opinion if the wheels cannot be kept firmly on the road surface then there is no advantage in disc brakes. You are perceptive Peter in that 59 years of ownership and about 200K miles have made me rather respectful of the old bus. Bryan

By the way I honestly cannot remember actually colliding with anything more than a locking of bumpers on ice. I rest my case!
