MG MG Y Type - YA brakes overhaul

Having settled the ignition for a while, we now turn to the brakes, and this is where our Workshop manual can be of little remedy to us, as it is the manual for the YB. Are there any copies of the brakes section of the YA manual available?)

YA brakes are pretty straight forward. Much the same as TC brakes, with the exception of Wheel cylinder size. 1-1/8" front and 1" rear. The cylinder castings are robust and are easy to hone in situ. The dust covers are different than modern sizes as the centre ho;e for the piston is much larger. The pistons themselves are of a wonderful alloy steel and clean-up very well. I re-used the dust covers as they were in reasonable condition. internal seals and springs are a standard available from any auto parts store.

The MG Octagon Car Club (founded in Stafford in 1969) has copies of the YA Owners Handbook part number B0185 and copies of the official YA Parts List B0155, but sadly no YA Workshop manual. The club stocks all the necessary brake parts that you will require when you overhaul your brakes. See the website at www.mgoctagoncarclub.com for more info.

You will need a Y manual Andy as there are quite a few differences to a YB, they occasionally come up for sale. But you can purchase a copy on disc from the international site AZ publications.

Have you looked at what is available to you on the Y/YT CD at https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/stores/yzpublications.shtml?

In testing the brakes with the brake drum off, I found out that the front piston was seized, as the back piston popped out and soaked the trailing brake shoe liner. Blast!
All the front brake shoe liners look new.
Is there a method to clean it up? If not, I would be very grateful if someone might let me in on the secret method of removing the thick horseshoe clips that won't come off from the bottom bolt which won't undo, please.
It's not my fault: SWMBO has taken the picture upside-down, again.

Congratulations! You havejust made the same errors that we have all done! I can't tell you how many time a thoughtless wrror in judgement has made a mess to clean up.

The shoe that got wet with brake fluid can be saved by washing with warm water with a little detergent in it, then allowed to dry thouroghly. Or, if the fluid soaked in, spray liberly with brake dry-clean and dry with paper towel.

The clip is mild steel. Spread the ends apart with a large flat blade screwdriver, until it can be tapped off. Be careful here. If you tap it off until there is a space to get a screwdriver in to pry it off the rest of the way from under the horeshoe side. keep it covered with a rag so it does not fly off and joining all the other parts that have gone off to eterity.

Hope this helps. .... CR

Thank you, particularly CR in Canada.
I shall with winkle tbe clips out somehow as soon as my largest screwdriver returns from eternity along with the dynamo field terminal nut, clock hands, windscreen winder screw, dashboard securing screw and countless others
