MG MG Y Type - YA engine numbers

I am researching the history of an engine which was probably produced as a YA engine in around 1950, I would guess. The engine number is 16439. Can anyone with a Car of around late 1950/early 1951 please note the original engine number of their car & let me know the engine number & some details of the original registration date of the car so I can take a view on when my engine was first available for use in a car?
I am writing a historical article for the MGCC/MG Octagon about a TD that had this engine fitted at some time before I bought the car in 1968. It would be really useful to have this information.
I appreciate you may have concerns about making this sort of information available, but it really would help me to make sense of my cars history.

There is a fair bit of information about XPAG history and casting numbers on our Technical Information page.

Hi Joe

I have looked through our database for 16439 and have no record of it in an MG Y at this time, however, if it had been used in a Y it would have been in the early to mid 1951 area.

If you happen to find out more I will be delighted to hear more from you on this please.

Thanks

I wonder if the following is helpful.
If the engine is XPAG/SC/16439, then it was probably installed in Feb 1951. This is because engine XPAG/SC/16463 was installed in early March 1951, the exact date being unknown as the early Y production records are lost.
If the engine is XPAG/TD2/16439, then it was first installed in a T type between 12th May 1952 and the 9th June 1952.

Don't know if you realise but when I went to go on the MGY database my machine wouldn't go there telling me there was a security issue

I will take this up with the host and have them attend to it. Be aware though that the "security issue" is only a warning to give visitors to an https:// site that the certificate has expired and that you might not want to go to those sites. You can override this and still go to the site. I the chase of our Database, there are no security worries to you or your data and the data in the site is also securely held too. I hope this alleviates your concerns.

Like Willy, I just had the same experience. Got a message:

"This site is not secure. This might mean that someone’s trying to fool you or steal any info you send to the server. You should close this site immediately.Recommended Close this tab"

Reassured by your reply but with so many scams happening on the internet these days, reluctance to ignore such a dire warning is understandable. Look forward to resuming normal access in due course.

An https:// address has to have a SECURITY CERTIFICATE validated periodically otherwise it can get flagged as a POSSIBLE insecure site. Unfortunately our automatic renewal did not kick in this time but it has now been renewed and there should be no issues for people logging onto the database. As John says for our https:// sites this is not a problem and you are at no risk to proceed through to the site if you get that warning again. If you are concerned the best place to query the status is to email me through the CONTACT US page.

Thanks Paul
As you say it's no real issue, I just thought you might not have known about it
All good
The problem for me was that my computer is highly protected and it just wouldn't allow me to get any further, which I guess is how It's supposed to work

Thank you for the information.
My TD (UMG 126) was prepared for the Paris St Raphael in late february 1951 by Abingdon to mark II spec & I think it is possible that a complete engine was fitted at the time (the car was at that time some 8 months old). The fact that the engine number 16439 appears to date from february 1951 makes this quite feasible. It is not a TD engine number, as the block casting (24445) would be wrong for such a car, I think.
I would like to talk to Mr Wilson from Buckingham, to understand where the date for engine number 16463 came from. Would that be possible? My home phone is 01455 290714.

Fairly easy to explain. In February 1951 a modified water pump, with an integral seal, was introduced. The first TD engine to be fitted with this pump was engine XPAG/TD/6483, which according to the production records was installed in a TD on the 1st March 1951.
The first Y engine to be fitted with the pump was XPAG/SC/16463, but as the early Y records are lost, the date the engine was installed in a car is not known, but it was probably also in early March. This is because after the 31st August 1951, when Y production records are available, for identical modifications to both T and Y engines, the first engines so modified were installed in cars on dates close together.
Your engine XPAG/SC/16439 is an earlier engine by 24, so I am guessing it was installed in a car in February 1951. I do not know the production rate of Y types, so it could have been earlier, and we know MG did not always install engines in numerical order, but I am only giving a reasonable estimate.
