Hi Paul

Yes it will

It depends ..the later YBs had an 8 inch clutch and flywheel arrangement whereas the early YBs and YAs had a 7 1/4 inch type. The gearbox will fit but the bell housings are different as the pedal cross shaft is wider - suggest you ask Neil Cairns. My car has YA engine (7 1/4 in) but a YB gearbox and bellhousing so needed various modifications to get the clutch to work properly. I suspect as long as you keep the existing bell housing all will be OK if you bolt the new gearbox to it.

True point David on the clutch, but I am not sure that the bell house is ant different per se and should bolt up OK. I droped mine one time and smashed the bell house to bits. I have one fitted from a scrapped TD (Nice for a Y to use bits off a TD for a cahnge!) and the old clutch and shaft fitted right in and it bolts right up to the back of the XPAG. Remember, unlike the A and B series engines there isnt a rear bearer plate.

Neil - do you have any comments please?

The 8 inch Clutch was introduced in 1951 on late Ys that were fitted with the SC2 engine, my Y included. All YBs had the 8 inch clutch. The clutch, the clutch cover and flywheel were all different on the SC2 engine.

In Dave Lawrence's book LTBYs, it makes reference to the fact that in W.E. Blower's Manual it suggests that the engine and gearbox are not interchangeable between early and late model; not because of the bell housing but because of the slightly altered position of the Clutch Fork in the Bell Housing. However, I am fairly certain that a number of people have interchanged later gearboxes with earlier engines and vice versa.

Perhaps a poll of viewers could confirm!

Regards.

As I understand it if you have the YA engine with the 7 1/4 inch clutch assembly and the later YB gearbox you have to first get a 7 1/4 in clutch plate from a 51-53 Hillman Minx. Then a 7 1/4 YA clutch cover and use that. You also have to lengthen the clutch rod (attached to the sump)that operates the release bearing. This set up (somehow) gets round the fact that the clutch cross shaft in the YB bell housing is wider than the one in the YA. I hope this explains but I am sure Neil Cairns can do it better as he also has this modification on his YB as do I.

David, to add to your poll:
I have a SC2 engine with the 8" clutch and the bellhousing is of the 7 1/4 type.

To clear the larger clutchcover it was neccesary to grind away some material in the bellhousing. The clutch operates fine this way.

My gutfeeling is that the gearboxes are the same, I think the difference is just in the bellhousing.
