MG MG Y Type - YA Master Cylinder question

Hello,

The master cylinder on my YA , 1392, is a replacement that has a bronze body and a with a reservoir than looks like a YA but is soddered on like a TC. Tin or whatever the TC reservoirs were. I rebuilt the MC only to find a pinhole leak in the reservoir. I have removed the MC.

I am reticent to send this to one of the rebuilders in the states such as White Post. My last experience was not good; my TA MC came back no better than when I sent it. I see NTG offers an exchange (or rebuild what I send) but I really don't need that. I did contact them nonetheless a couple of weeks ago but have not heard back. I need to have the reservoir rebuilt or exchange this for the original cast type.

Might anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you.

Cheers,

I'm not sure what you refer to as a pin hole, there is a small hole in the master cylinder wall to the reservoir which is intended to allow the slave cylinders to retract. If this hole is blocked the slave cylinders will not release the brakes. Bryan

If you want an original design Y-Type MC suitable for rebuild, I think there is one spare here - no internals, just the bare MC.

Can you either post a picture here of what you have or send me one?

As to US based rebuilders I completely concur and only ever have one recommendation and that is C&C Parts(see our Links page on www.mgytypes.org). They are based in Holland but are about the ONLY people I would trust with an original MG Y/YT Master Cylinder. I have sent them several over the years from the US. Yes out and return shipping via UPS is not cheap ... but you are dealing with a unique master cylinder and getting a replacement for a lost one will not be easy or cheap so go with a GOOD carrier and take insurance on it but mark the customs declaration for a) the full value of insurance - $200) and that it is going for REPAIR AND RETURN TO ORIGINAL OWNER.

Thank you for your replies. The MC is leaking from the reservoir at the tip of the arrow on the end panel. I can not see a hole but when I push the brake pedal down a weeping stream of fluid comes out from that point onto the floor.

Mark, as a temporary repair, you might be interested in my post on the TC threads, regarding repair to brake master cylinder weep. John.

Mark,
Your cylinder reservoir should not be pressuring when you apply the brake pedal. If it's just at the top of the tin can, I would keep the level of fluid about 1/4" below the top and try a solder repair to the hole.

I have a cast iron original cylinder body & reservoir if you need it - $20AUD + postage. It needs to be sleeved and you will need to find the internals, but you may be able to use the internals of the cylinder you have.

email me direct if you wish.

Good Luck

Hi Mark
I suggest that you try Past Parts in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk UK. www.pastparts.co.uk They have rebuilt master cylinders and brake cylinders fit my YT and for a TA that I used to own. Excellent service
However there must be someone in the US who can provide such a service
Try the TA-TB-TC website as they have access to the skills and expertise that you need. Far more convenient than shipping your parts to the UK or Europe.

All the best

So far no one I would trust in the US guys, that is why I only ever recommend C&C Parts - good work and reliable turn around of YOUR cylinder if you want or an EXCHANGE if you want faster service. Good people.

Here is a Y/YT M/C for you. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MGYA-mg-ya-MGYT-MGTC-BRAKE-MASTER-CYLINDER-VERY-RARE-/111570644448?ssPageName=ADME:SS:SS:GB:3160 but note it will need refurbishment so the seller may be open to offers.

I have no financial interest in this auction item.

I have just had two spare YA/YT brake master cylinders completely overhauled.

They have new pistons, have been stainless steel sleeved, new filler caps and rubber kit fitted ready to go.

One could already be sold but I am offering the 2nd one for $350.00AUD + postage. This is an outright sale, no exchange required.

cheers
