MG MG Y Type - YA on ebay (irish car)

Heres Y6604 for sale looks to be a CKD car in same batch as mine Y6641, with a registration number very close to mine.

Suprised no bids on this one..looks a good car.

Do I detect unusual headlamps on this car? They seem a wee larger, and the lens flatter than sealed beams. Were they originally larger reflector type headlamps when they came out of the factory, rather than the sealed beam unit we are accustomed to today?

10/10 for observation. They are not the usual Lucas S.700 7 inch found on later Ys, Y/Ts and YBs for sure. It may be that the originals were too bad to refit on the rebuild, or it could be that the owner simply preferred them. I have no idea, but as to powers of observation - brilliant!

The headlights on this car look the same as those fitted to my 1934 Lanchester LA10 - Lucas LB 140s. If so, they predate the MG by many years as they were pre-war. In the 1939 Lucas parts catalogue, these lights have the 'new' fluted glass lenses, which I think were introduced around 1935. The flat glass is offered as an option.

The photo shows the Lanchester. The chrome bulb shields on the headlights were 'optional extras' and not fitted to all headlights of this type.

Hi Folks,

See this car has now sold....

Did anyone look at the pictures posted on Pistonheads?

There were a couple showing the front suspension from underneath.

Notice anything strange??

You better give us the full URL please Rob. I will be honest and say that I did not look further than the pictures on eBay and then only quickly.

And another.....

Hi Rob,

the suspension bump stops are fitted upside down, they should come in contact with the upper swivel link, do i get a prize????

cheers chris

The suspension bump stops are off an MG B so dont fit exactly as they should hence the packing block.
D MULLEN

Hi Chris....

No Cigar I'm afraid...the bump stops are fitted the correct way around. The upper part contacts with the swivel link and the lower part with the spring pan, thus it acts at a bump stop both ways.

Have another look.....there is something else that looks very wrong to me.

Hi David - the bumpstops are not from MG MGB but they are what Moss and others sell now for MG TD and TF (old one). They also sell an aluminum spacer for them too. Sadly no one does them squeezed up for our cars though one day I will put a modern one in my press and see if it will squeeze up.

Rob, I think what is most disconcerting is the very torn steering rack gaiter is it not? Certainly the opportunity for rocks and debris to get in and damage the rack and pinion.

Apologies Rob,

Couldn't see top part of bump stops due to aluminium blocks.

Can't see any other problem, apart from knackered steering gaiter, I'm afraid you have me!!!

Another problem could be that the horn wires do not appear to be connected too.

Okay Folks,

Here's the answer....

The upper wishbone or damper lever arm is UPSIDE DOWN!
The lever arm should be 'cranked' down.

This must have some negative impact upon Mr Issigonis' so carefully worked out suspension geometry?

On full extension of the spring the lever arm may even foul the chassis before the bump stop contacts the upper swivel link.

Dangerous?

MOT failure? (they'd probably not spot it)

Perhaps we should put a call out to the new owner and let him know.

I wouldnt have much confidence in the way the rest of the car has been reassembled...how about you.

Someones going to tell me that this was a 1970s mod to lower the front end and went with the overlong shackle plates to jack the back.

Regards

Hi Rob

You are absolutely right - the upper arm is upside down ... as well as all the other somewhat dodgy things that were spotted.

I have been trying to contact the seller and through them get in touch with the new owner so for now, rather than them getting lots of contact please can we leave it that the International MG Y Type Register will continue to try to follow up.

Appreciate your vigilence though. Well done.

HI Rob,

Eagle eyed or what! I certainly didn't see it until you pointed it out.I wonder if he spring required more compression to get the top link bolt in ?

Maybe its the Irish way of building CKD cars I will have to check my shock absorbers, there hidden away in a box at present HAHAHA

Cheers Chris
