MG MG Y Type - YA rear dampers (shock absorbers)

I have a LH one with a lot of play. I am aware of the NTG reconditioning service but wonder if there are any other hints and tips out there among you wonderful people who know everything about anything Y'ish?

Clearly being in NZ now, sending the parts back to Blighty for reconditioning adds to the cost and time not to mention the potential for 'missing in transit' issues which make the idea less appealing.

Who knows, one of you may have spare units for sale???

Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Murray,

Last October I had my YT MOT'd and the rear shocks were leaking, the YT shocks same as YA. There are two listed companies in UK who service/ repair shocks the first being Vintage Classic and Shock absorbers Croydon and the other being Stevson Motors Wolverhampton.

I know VCSA have long backlog but having taken them off in October i didn't get them back till March this year, I got good job done, and have others waiting to be done for the just in case to put on shelf.

If you can get NTG exchange may be quickest route for you. The thing to remember with YA rear shocks is there are no adjustment to the torque of the arm, so unlikely to get two identical same if ones have been moved or changed over time of the car life.

Be very careful trusting people to recon dition your lever arm dampers...often for recon read con...I had a lot of problems with a particular company as have others. I would stick to NTG or another company people have reported as doing a good job. Always ask what excatly they have done to your dampers and get a written receipt and guarantee. Pay by credit card so that if they mess them up you can claim a refund from the credit card company which is quicker than taking them to the small claims court.

You may consider converting to telescopic dampers. On the imgytr website is an example of how this can be done:

You can spend a lot of money on lever arm shocks and be continually disappointed with the results, whether you get dudded or have RS shocks to start with.

I have gone to telescopics front and rear a long time ago & retain the Jackall system as well. The best sized shocks I found were Ford Escort rears - Mk1 or 2 are the same. Good price too, even Down Under.

Now PB will be along shortly, so I had better get to drawing up the brackets I made for inclusion on the website.
