MG MG Y Type - YA Rear Hub Nut

Having found my rear near side brake shoes on my YA contaminated with oil I have been working on replacing the oil seal. As I had a spare back axle I thought I would do a trial run on it. The special nut holding the hub on was well bashed about by previous removal with a blunt instrument and I had to do the same to remove it. This motivated me to make a spanner before setting about my YA hub. After turning up a suitable shape and a touch of filers cramp I was quite pleased with my effort, see the picture.
On removing the half shaft from my YA I was surprised to find that the hub nut although having the same thread was 4mm smaller in diameter than the one on my spare axle and my spanner only fitted the outside edge. Luckily it came off quite easily. The spanner sizes in the manual suggest that the small size is correct and my large nut is a bastard size.
As the Y Register is in the process of manufacturing a batch of the smaller size spanners I would be interested to know if anyone else has come across the larger size. Unfortunately you would need to remove your half shaft to check and I don’t expect many owners to have noticed in the past.
Nut photos to follow.

I suggest the Octagon Car Club would have your answer!

Are you sure the oil leak is because of oil getting past the seal? Often times on Y and Y/T it is actually passing the gasket of the half shaft to the wheel.

You can either buy new gaskets from NTG ... or make your own up from gasket paper using the brake drum as a template - the hole in the center has to be knocked out and the 5 for the wheel studs and the three for the screws that hold the half shaft and brake drum all squeezed up together. Once you have knocked the holes out with a ball-pein hammer just cut the paper after you put it on the wheel and drop the halfshaft in. Use the three brake drum screws to hold it in place while you cut off the surplus gasket paper. There is a video in the Technical Centre Technical Videos collection on www.mgytypes.org if you are not sure about how to make your own gaskets.

I had a very similar problem on a client's Y that I had in my shop recently. At a previous time the previous owner had had the halfshafts replaced with the earlier (1980s) subsititue halfshalfs. The old gaskets had, I believe, been reused and had leaked.

Very important note ... Before attempting to fit your new gaskets do check that both the surface of the wheel and the inside flange of the half shaft are CLEAN, DRY and FLAT! If even one of these three conditions is not met you will not get a good seal and be back at square one quickly!

Pretty sure Paul oil poured out when I removed the half shaft. I think you missed the point it was the over size nut I was concerned about gaskets arn't a problem I buy new and keep a roll of gasket paper for the odd emergency.

I have checked with Octagon Richard and the ones they sell are the standard small size 2 1/8" OD as I suspect would the other MG parts retailers. I was just interested to know if anyone else had come across what appears to be a bastard version of the nut at 2 1/4" OD.

Peter, Understood, just thought sometimes the clubs get to hear the quirks of all the different cars.
