MG MG Y Type - YA Restoration nearly there.

Had a good morning today my battery arrived and time had come to fire up (YASMIN)the YA ,probably first time it has run for over 30 years, see pics. had a bit of a problem initially getting oil pressure,I had to take the pipe off the pump and fill pump with oil before she would prime.Once oil pressure was established I put the plugs in and went for the starter. I am pleased to say she immediately kicked into life and sounded sweet, reving freely, no drips or leaks, jobs a good one!!!! Bonnets, front wings, doors and bumpers to fit now, seats due back from upholster end of june so hopefully back on road early July. 2 years 7 months since I dragged her from Ireland.

Cheers Chris

Well done Chris - it looks really good. I note you have an alternator - have you changed the polarity or have you sourced an example that is positively earthed?

All the best Jerry
See you on Saturday at the Spring Weekend?
J P BIRKBECK

Hi Jerry,

As I have fitted a new wiring harness I decided to change to negative earth ,fit an alternator and do away with the regulator and fit a fusebox.I now have all the circuits fused independently on appropriate fuses. Not as it left the factory, but neither is the 5 speed gearbox, seatbelts and remote brake servo I have fitted. Some may not approve of these mods, but I consider them to be safety modifications which may help protect me and mine out there on the busy UK roads.

Were looking forward to this weekend, the Y will have to wait while next year to attend the spring run, but I'm sure the TD will enjoy the run.

Cheers Chris

Hi Chris - it's just on a year since I visited you on a freezing day. What a beautiful standard of finish - I love the polished but not bling brightwork. A couple of queries as I battle on with YA 3348 : did you replace all seals in the Jackall pump and rams?If so, from what source? Do I recall that you upgraded shock absorbers all round? Did you put together a new loom yourself, or buy in a replacement, and if so, from where?? Sorry about all the questions, but you know what it's like living out in the sticks! Best wishes, and see you again in Aug. next year. John.

Hi John,
Nice to hear from you, thanks for the compliments. yes I renewed all the seals in the Jackall pump and rams. The seal kit(3off)for the pump was from the MGCC Y register
see link http://www.mgccyregister.com/node/32
the seals for the rams were from the MG SVW
http://www.svwspares.co.uk/catalogue/parts.asp?pID=25
The shock absorbers were rebuilt but I fitted poly bushes all round on the suspension for longevity. I purchased a new loom, upgraded for fitting a alternator, from Autosparks http://www.autosparks.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=4293

Keep plugging on with the resto it all comes together eventually I promise!!! then the fun begins!!!

Hope that helps Cheers Chris

Totally agree with what you say about Autosparks - they are simply the best people to work with. We are proud to have them on the Links page of the International MG Y Type Register! I have had several of their looms myself and also bought them for many of my customers.

Good morning over there Chris - thanks for the info; I totally support your sensitive upgrades, and plan to do the same. e.g. I've already polybushed the stabilizer bar, and will do the same throughout;likewise the switch to alternator, and will certainly go to Autosparks for the loom. Last year I stripped, cleaned and reinstalled my son's '78 mini loom, but don't fancy trying to rescue a much tattier Y loom. One last thing - did you paint her yourself? Keep those photos coming mate - cheers for now. John.

Hi Chris

I see you fitted a 5 cog box, if the conversion is 'Hi Gear' then you may find that since the type 9 box output shaft is 10mm higher than MG box the front universal jount is very close to the transmission tunnel. In my case with the floor loaded the flimsy floor beares lowered the tunnel just onto the shaft. The noise was actually greater than the damage! I placed 8mm packing under the beares foreward holding bolts [I used penny washers] and bell mouthed the forward end of the tunnel which sorted the problem. Bryan

Hi Brian,

I replaced my centre floor steels with stronger angle iron and have not noticed the problem with the tunnel fitted, however as you have had a problem I will remove the tunnel and remeasure to see how much clearance I have between the universal and and the cover. Thanks for the advice it will be easier to do it now before I fit the seats and carpets.

Hi Chris,
My YB is just getting into the finishing straight. (Only the filling, trim, gearbox, seats, cards, etc. etc. to do). Did you use packing washers between the body and chassis to get if even? If so what did you use? You can PM me if you like to prevent everyone else being bored.
Looks great by the way.

Hi Peter,

Yes Peter I used squares of 1/8 rubber, with the hole cut out in the centre for the fixing bolts. I would also recommend fitting the doors after you have bolted the body down. I found I needed to add an extra rubber packer in one rear corner as the edge of the back door was catching the body on the top rear corner when fitted. Fitting an extra packer stopped it catching.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for this and for the advice about the doors. I still can't decide what colour it's going to be though.

Hi Chris,

Mines in the paintshop now....as we discussed last year maroon / cream is a good look....or 'blood and custard' if you are a railway fan!

Ive tried to be original but Im afraid I failed....so we'll look like bookends!

I am pleased to say the YA is now taxed and on the road with 20 miles on the clock. I am looking forward to Ripon show where there is always a nice gathering of Y's from the north of england.
I have attached a finished picture
Cheers Chris

Looks beautiful, Chris.

Somehow the clean look without foglamp and badgebar is very pleasing. I removed them for a neutral look at a wedding and really considere not putting them back. I compromised to only fit the foglamp.

What is the ride like at the rear and over bumpy roads etc...mine is appalling and I need to know what it should be like. Did you use new rear springs and who did you get them from.
D MULLEN

Dave,

I will report back in a few weeks when the new springs, bushes, and reconditioned shockers have bedded in a little.

Chris,
Looks great, well done. Mine just needs a bit of fettling and it'll be as good as new. See the pic. below.
