MG MG Y Type - YA Spare Wheel

Hi All
Just a quick question - is the YA spare wheel /tyre a particularly tight fit in its space under the boot?
Or is it that you carry it only partially inflated?
Wheel and tyre are the correct 5.25x16.

John

On my car it is a tight fit, but does not need to be deflated.

Thanks Anton , I will have to push harder ? Bit concerned with the bolts holding the rear edge of the wooden piece protruding down into the tyre wall . Need to trim them right back I think.

Good idea to trim the threads flash with the cage nuts.

All Spare Wheel men
Little tip, Put a piece of rope
through the centre of the wheel leave the ends near the opening then when wheel is required or for pressure checking grab the and pull very little effort required.

Nice thinking John will try that

I have a rope on mine but thinking about it
a length old flat rachet tiedown strap would be even better being so thin

Yep got the idea John .
I was wondering whether a sheet of perhaps 1000gauge polythene under the wheel would help it slide.

John,

Avoid polythene in my view, it would sweat with temperature extremes. In my view you need air around as much of the car, this is why I don't actually use the car covers I purchased a long time ago.

Just my view anyway

Hi guys here is another good idea. Fit an extension hose to your spare tyre valve and mount the other end at an accessible spot so you can regularly check your spares pressure and not need to extract the wheel. You can see I mounted mine on my home made wheel bracket. I bought this fitting a long time ago and it has been there since the car went back on the road in '92. Try your local auto spares retailer, camping and caravan or 4WD shop or an internet search for spare wheel valve extension or make your own. You will need a reasonable length of hose to find a spot where the hose will not be crushed and to reach the valve. You will need a screw on connection at the tyre valve that will hold the valve needle open and a connection with a valve at accessible end. And yes even my tiny 135 x 15 Michelin is a tight fit and a pain to get in and out!

Good point John , I was trying to come up with something that would ease the sliding of the wheel in and out.
Probably easiest to decide to not have a puncture then there is no problem!!
Like the extension idea Richard .
Thanks guys

Remember the bias ply tires were only inflated to somewhere between 18 and 25 psi. I have an oversized tire as a spare at the moment, so I keep it uninflated. Will not come out otherwise.

For a remote inflation extension, you can use a VW beetle pressure hose for the windshield wiper system. They are still easy to acquire. Hose is 2 mm O.D.
