MG MG Y Type - YA, B pillar interior trim
Hello All,
Just a quick question - does anybody know the length of the screws that hold the trim panel on the B post, to the body . This is the T shaped panel . There are 8 self tappers each side . Some of mine appear to have been screwed into straight plywood strips , plywood triangles (top and bottom ) or even straight into the inner steel frame . It would seem that different lengths of screws had been used but its too long ago to remember when i took them off . Any comments , observations welcomed and thank you as always . Cheers John B Y4424 |

Hi Sloop - I'm away from home for a few months, but I do remember there were witness marks in the old substrate (as you say, metal in some parts, ply in others). I made up all new ply shapes, so just used a straight pick/scriber to judge how deep it was safe to go before hitting bodywork! I'm sure someone else will give you more precise help. Keep going! Hi John, thanks for that. I've since checked with LTBYs and the plywood bits were for securing the door opening trim . It seems the panels are screwed into the metal. Have to peel back my edging trim to see what I can see . This bloody car is fighting me every inch of the way ! Thanks again John |

John Hopefully these photos will help with placement of the 8 screws and cup washers. If you need more information let me know. Paul ![]() ![]() |

Hi Paul , Thanks for those .
When I bought the car , back in the dark ages it only had a nearside trim panel on the B posts. Over the years woodworm has eaten most of it to dust , even put holes in the rexine . However the rexine held together well enough to pretty much plot where the holes should be. So today I've had a good look at it all , had to remove the edge trim but got it sorted . So for the record , on my car, this panel screws into the plywood pieces attached to the body . Long strips down the middle and four triangles , two at the top and two at the bottom. Much as you described John. My confusion arose because a couple of the triangular pieces had split near the edge and had exposed holes in the metal , thus requiring longer screws. The plywood bits in my car look original and are about 5/16" thick. Whether the holes in the body were from the factory, or a pre 1970 (when I bought the car) repair. Who knows? Still all will be sorted soon , onward and upward gentlemen . Sorry this has become a saga. Cheers John B |

The vertical pieces weren't plywood John - far too expensive. They originally would have used very heavily twisted paper - see Let there be Ys. Plywood would have been far too expensive back then. This was probably replaced in the 60s or early 70s. Paul |

Hi Paul, Now that possibility hadn't dawned on me . But the panels were made of plywood so they must have had loads of off cuts, and there don't appear to be any grooves to force the twisted paper into on the vertical sections though. All a bit difficult to see with the cloth and rubber of the door trim overlapping it all . As long as it takes a screw I am a happy bunny! Cheers John |

Certainly in the case of Y3348, the vertical ply underneath the rexine cover of the B pillar was ply from original. Enough is known of the provenance of the car to be sure of that. The tacking strip running horizontally around much of the roof was of course originally twisted paper, and ironically I have replaced that with ply! Yes in my earlier comment about ply I was referring to the fillets not the backing of the B post cover. When I replaced my fillet stuff I used particle board. Paul |

Hi All, My 52 YB0362 was 9years old when my father purchased it for £285 !! and is very original and has plywood beneath the still original red covering the screws are 25mm long. John |

Thanks John , that fits in nicely with what I have found . Cheers John |
