MG MG Y Type - YB BRAKE PIPES

Can anyone point me to an illustration of the brake pipe runs for a YB. On dismantling the front end for a rebuild I took lots of photos but as I have learned more about it I have come to realise that the previous rebuild had routed them wrongly. For instance the flexible hoses appear to have been installed with the chassis end the wrong way round. It seems to work that way but it throws the pipe routing out such that I can't rely on my original photos. In particular can anybody confirm that the two pipes that come from the master cylinder and then back to the rear of the car from the top end of the offside flexible are clipped to the underside of the chassis. Mine weren't, but looking closely at the holes for the clips it would appear that this is where they are supposed to be. If so it would appear that they were put in an extremely vulnerable position by the factory. I would prefer them to be on the inside of the offside chassis leg for protection. Also does the pipe joining the two front brakes run along the rear of the cross member as I would think (it was hanging unclipped in mid air when I took it apart). Any pointers on the routing of the jackall piping would also be appreciated as this also seems to have been mucked about with somewhat.

Ian,
I have recently done this job and you are welcome to come and have a look at my car in Sheffield. The long pipe should be clipped to the inner edge of the chassis, not underneath it. On my car the front pipe was also loose. I clipped it to the rear edge of the cross-member. It may have originally run along the top of the cross member, but you'd need to remove the engine to install it there. I'll try and find some photos.

Thanks Pete. The long pipe to the rear would appear to be impeded by the pedal box if fitted to the inside of the chassis. I have found a hole on the inside of the chassis in front of the box which may be for the pipe or it may be for something else though I would have thought that more than one clip would be needed. On the underside there are two holes Still fitted with the plastic plugs for the clips which I am presuming are for the two pipes but I don't like putting pipes underneath the chassis. As for the cross member I have four holes at the rear (the engine being out makes seeing these easy). I presume three of these are for the brake pipe which leaves the question of where the Jackall pipe goes. It was not even clipped originally and, being a larger diameter (1/4 in I think) would not fit into the same size clips as the brake pipe so I am sure you can understand my confusion.

On looking at the MG one and a quarter litre workshop manual I find on page 154 (L-12) illustration L8 which shows an exploded view of the hydraulic brakes. This shows the pipe from the Master Cylinder to the N/S brake (not the offside as on mine). This is clipped to the outside of the chassis with the run to the rear coming from a 3 way union to the rear of the master cylinder. Additionally the position of the clips on the cross member is unclear. The mountings for the inner end of the flexibles appear to be of a different orientation also. This is totally different to the way mine was but I am aware that this diagram is probably for the YA. Was the YB different?

Here is the diagram from my YB manual. The brake pipes on mine were pretty much as it shows here. There is a pipe running from the master cylinder to the o/s brake via a 3 way union. The positioning of the 3 way unions was a little different on my car to how it looks on the diagram. The long brake pipe runs along the lip created by the bottom of the chassis. You should find 3 metal clips on the inner side of the chassis rail. The pipe should pass through the pedal box (or possibly it goes through a gap between the pedal box and the chassis - I was never entirely sure) - it followed the same route as the wiring on my car. A bit fiddly but I was able to thread something thin through, following the route of the wiring, and pull the brake pipe through.
There is a really good diagram showing the jackall system in my manual - do you have that?
Pete

This shows the 3 way connector on the o/s. The pipe running pass the jackall ram is the long pipe to the rear brakes. The top one, passing through a narrow gap goes to the re master cylinder. The bottom pipe (the union is undone in this photo) goes to the n/s brake.

A close up of the same connector

This is the pipes and wiring emerging from the front of the pedal box. You are looking at the inner side of the chassis rail and you can see the front of the pedal box on the right. You can clearly see the brake pipe from the master cylinder emerging from it, held in place by a metal clip. The long pipe from the rear brakes runs along the lip formed at the bottom of the chassis rail. You can't see the pipe in this shot but you can just about make out one of the clips.

Thanks Pete. That is just what I need.
