MG MG Y Type - YB for auction

There is a YB to be auctioned at Shanklin, Isle of Wight on 21 April. It is YB 1036. It has been unused for several years following the death of the owner. His widow has decided that it should be sold for someone else to enjoy.

I have looked at it and it appears generally sound. There is significant rust in the door bottoms and along the bottom of the body at the rear. There is also blistering at various points around the car, but this does not seem so serious. It has been resprayed at some time in the past, although not very well, in 2-tone green.

The red interior is original and in reasonable condition. I think that a little tlc would restore it to an acceptable condition. The woodwork is fine and the dealer's shield is still attached to the centre of the dash. The headlining has darkened, but is tight.

The engine is the original one. I could not start it as the battery was flat and the starting handle was not with the car. It was reputedly driven to its present location about a week ago. There is a large history file with the car, although I have not seen it yet.

Although I am looking for a Y and this one is close to home, there is too much work needed to do to restore it to its former glory for me to do. Nonetheless, I think that it can be restored relatively easily.

The auctioneer reckons it will make £2500-3000. If anyone is interested in the car, you can contact me for a chat, or I will go and look at the history file.

New door bottom panels are available from Sportscar Metalworks - see Links Page at www.mgytypes.org.

Neats Foot Oil or saddle soap will be the first step to restore the leather to subtleness. This should be done before extensive use of the seats so they dont crack or split.

Notwithstand the above, this would be in my garage if I were still in Hampshire UK as I dont have a YB!

Someone should grab this - Mike, there really isnt that much wrong with it and I can put you in touch with a VERY good man on the mainland in Hampshire who restored my YA (not the same guy who still hasnt done my YT that I still have over there) if you change your mind.

The car attracted little interest - only two bids. It was sold for £1850 to an absent commission bidder. It certainly had potential, but the restoration cost would probably exceed its value when complete.

Let's hope we hear from the new owner.

It would probably be a close thing as to a return on invesmens however Y Types are attracting ever steadily rising values.

However, anyone who buys a car, even a Y, with the intention of doing a quick cheap fix and making their money back on a fast flip sale is really missing the whole point of owning a classic car. The "invisible" return one gets from a Y, vastly outstips the investment one has to make to restore one - that is why I have my Y (Y/5270) and 2 YTs under restoration, and also why I enjoy doing the Y website to see the joy that other Y owners get from their cars too.

I am going to look at this car tomorrow (Sat) and will let you know what I think . It is unsold.

The car was definitely sold at the auction. If it is for sale now, it is a resale.

Hi all
I finally got to see this car via the auction house.
It was not sold. I went to to the garage on the Isle where it was being kept. Unfortunately it had been run round the island with the block drain tap open and had over heated, which the garage beleived had caused valve problems as the car would no longer run. the internal condition is as good as any I have seen including concours cars, externally is another matter, but chassis is sound and alot of welding has been done. It would have been ideal as a running restoration, but as I do not have the space to repair the engine as well as the body, I have needed to pass this time. I have been away since so do not know what the latest situation is. The seller is the wife of the now deceased owner who wants the money to help fund children through college. the reserve was £2500 I believe. It was probable worth that and mabe more when running but not now.
