MG MG Y Type - YT 4310 first good run

Hi guys
Just letting you know that YT 4310 is on the road and going well.

Took it on a club run today (approx. 100 miles) to see how it went as next weekend I am taking it on a 600 mile / 1000 km run to Goondiwindi to the club's Great Train Race, where we following a historic Stream train on its run. With fellow YT owners Tony Slattery and Ellen Wilson also going along.

Today's run was up to Tamborine Mountain, so there was a bit of a steep ascent and descent (12-15% over 7km) which it took in 2nd no problems. No real problems other than running rich, using oil, noisy tappets, jumping all over the road on rough surfaces and nearly loosing a hub cap (stopped and found it in the bush adjacent to road and then took the others off).

My earlier post was a bit tooooo.. early.

I took the YT to the mechanics to see about getting tappets fixed and the carbies tuned correctly.

We knew the engine was sucking air around the inlet manifold, so we took the carbies and inlet manifold off to find that a PO had ported the head too much and actually cut into the 2 stud holes between the inlet ports. We filled the holes with aryldite (see photo) and placed a air stopping compound on and around the studs, washers and nuts. It still sucked in air. In the end, in order have the car run smoothly, we raised the idle speed considerably.

Well off on the run I went, only to decide when I got to the morning tea meeting place (60km away) to find that it was leaking oil in a number of places, so decided to drive back home and take the 1972 VW Beetle instead.

On the drive home (another 60km), lots of oil smoke (oil dropping onto exhaust), a slipping clutch (oil from rear seal), on hills it had no compression.

I am in the process of removing the head, so it can be repaired (sleeve the stud holes and correctly fill the port holes) and then I will remove engine (to replace seals and gaskets) and clutch clean / replace??

Coolant level was correct and there was no oil in the coolant when I drained the radiator.

Discussing the problems with Tony Slattery, Tony thinks the side cover gasket / breather pipe may not have worked properly and hence the pressure blew oil out the seals and sump gasket.

See attached photo of side cover gasket.

Tacko drive broke inside Generator, so that needs to be dismantled to fix.

The joys of classic cars.

Engine is out of car and head is off the block.

Attached is a combined photo of the head and block showing the problem. Front 2 pistons are oily and coked whilst the rear 2 are dry.

Considering my post and photos above, does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be the problem.

As can also be seen, head has oval water holes, whilst block has round water holes.

Hi Stuart, has the gasket blown between cyls 1 & 2?.

I think it may be better to use a round hole head gasket also.

It might be best to replace the head rather than go to the trouble with repairs.

Just my input.

Hi Don
No, the gasket between the cyls 1 & 2 hasn't blown. I think it is broken rings as both these cyls have a lip at top of piston travel, whereas 3 & 4 have no lip. Tomorrow's job is to remove the crank and pistons.

Removed the camshaft today. It looked good until we started measuring lobe diameters and lift. We found the cam had been reground and there was a difference of about 1mm between lobe base circle diameters - no wonder the tappets were noisy and we had trouble setting the tappets.

The centre bearing had been damaged at sometime as per photo attached.

I wonder what I find when I pull the Crank and pistons, considering it had no oil pump or filter when bought and I doubt the engine had been run since being rebuilt, and I purchased the car.

cheers
Stuart
