MG MG Y Type - YT Bumpers and Over riders

I have a 1948 MG YT. The bumpers are not in very good shape, dinged, slightly chipped, etc. I am looking for new or like new set of bumpers. I think replacements might be less expensive than straightening and re-chroming my current ones.

I am also looking for a set of over-riders. I would consider purchasing them and installing them on my current bumpers.

Proper Y/YT bumpers are not available. TD and TD overriders are ... but they are not the same. (See Let there be Ys - presume you have a copy? If not, buy one on CD from me!)

I would say take the time and bite the expense to have the original ones straightened and rechromed.

Y/T and YB overriders are the same ... but different to TD and are unique to Y/T YB. If you know someone who will make you a mold from some old ones I have let me know and I will LOAN you them. Again, it wont be cheap and only you may know the difference ... but then that is the delight and joy you get when YOU KNOW it is correct and YOU KNOW that others do not!

Small ford spares in the UK have 93e prefect overriders Same as y-type mentioned in John Lawsons alternative parts.

I have considered buying these overriders but am a bit concerned that they will turn out to be not quite the same as Y type ones. Has anybody actually compared the two?

Have not seen the repro’s but purchased original prefect overriders at a swap and could not pick the difference from originals.

Try NTG

I purchased a couple off them a few years ago
They are a good match

Steve,

My YB came with its orig bumpers and overriders. They were bent, welded and rusty beyond far repair.
I fitted a set of TD/F face bars and overriders and made do.
Last year I learned of the Ford Perfect overriders. I ordered a set from Small Ford Spares. They appear to be exact matches for my orig bent ones.
The TD/F face bars have a slightly different curvature in cross section than the orig Y ones. This results in a slight gap between new overriders and the face bars, but the rubber packing pieces compensate for most of this.
The new overriders have transformed the look of the car! The TD/F ones were much larger and heavier, the Ford ones delicate and light.

Stephen. Sorry for hijacking your thread about bumpers and skewing it towards overriders. Personally, when faced with the same problem when I split the front bumper through careless reversing, I bought a front TD bumper for the front of my YB intending to cover the starting handle somehow while making my own support bracket. While going through this process I decided to try and repair the original bumper so as to have both a correct shape bumper and one original to the car. This was successful and due to my efforts and the skill of the polishers and rechromers I now have a much better outcome. A bonus is that the originals are much better made than the repros. and are likely to now have a better quality of chrome on them. I also have an unused, new, TD bumper to dispose of.

I very much appreciate the help you have given me on this subject. I will eventually get my original bumpers straightened and re=chromed. On a temporary solution I am purchasing replacement bumpers and overriders from NTG. I know these are actually TD bumpers with a conversion bar.
