MG MG Y Type - YT Chassis Nos.

After a trip to the MGCC Concourse in Sydney yesterday (5 YA's, 3 YT's), I took some photos & made a record of the chassis nos. (taken from the LH front chassis extension)to include on the photos.

The chassis nos. for the tourers were in the normal production run with YA's & therefore, as per Lawrence's book, were not different to saloons, i.e. Y3360. However, my YT is stamped with "YT4320". Both other tourers were earlier than mine.

Did the stamping on later cars reflect the usage for tourers, or could mine have been re-stamped (the numbers & letters appear to be of the same type of script as the others).

My car YT4619 also has also been stamped on the Chassis but to date has been the only known example. Dave Lawrence has inspected my car and agreed that the stamping of the T between the Y and the 4619 looked original and was probably done by the factory as the spacing is correct. The fact that your car has also been stamped in this way seems to endorse that later YTs were identified in this way. Incidentally my other YT car number YT4267 does not have the T stamped into the chassis. Therefore the practice must have started after YT4267 but on or before YT4320. It would be interesting to know if your car was the first or if there is an earlier known example.

Unfortunately I think that this fact is too late to be incorporated into Dave Lawrence's Let There Be Y Supplement that is due out either later this year or early next unless we can make the 'STOP PRESS'.

Regards.

David.

David,

I will check with two other people in my car club here in Sydney. One has YT4318 - only 2 before mine, and another has one much later (I think - going from memory). I'll ask them to see what is stamped on their cars and let you know.

I checked last night with the owners of YT4318 & YT5139. YT4318 definitely does NOT have the "T" (i.e. stamped as Y4318) and the owner of YT5139 believes (it was late - he will check soon) his doesn't have it either.
I had another good look at mine last night. It doesn't appear to be overstamped, and the spacing is such that the "T" could not have just been added. I took a couple of photos, and if they come out clear, will try to post.

Hi Bob,

I was trundling down River road from North Sydney on the way home last night on the Laverda triple, and as I peeled off to go under the Gladesville Bridge to join Victoria Road, I fell in behind a lovely little Y sedan, maroon in colour, with Club plates MG 84. The fellow driving moved over to let me pass, as I was sitting quite close to him checking out the car. I waving him back into the lane, and he turned left down to Henley. Lovely car!

Tell him sorry if he thought I was going to run him down!

Marty,

Sounds like it was Alf who arranged for all the Y's on Sunday. Wonder what he was doing driving during the week on club plates !
Bob Simpson

Busted! No wonder he was being ultra polite! It is legal to drive to the club meeting, or within 7 km's of home for "testing" purposes.
Martin Cutler

BOB,
My 49yt has y4061 on chassis extension.

Martin. Thanks for the compliment about my car. The reason I turned down towards Henley was to attend an MG Car Club meeting and I was perfectly entitled to be on the road at that time.

I was not being ultra polite when I moved over for you. I always try to be polite on the road. What I was doing when I moved over is called self-preservation from motor bikes travelling six inches from a rear bumper bar !!. Nice to know you appreciate the car.

Bob, I am surprised at your comment. Please read the second sentence above.

Alf,
Not being in the car club, I didn't know that the meetings were held during the week. You could easily have been coming back from getting serviced, petrol, etc. No malicious intent implied.

BTW, I spoke to Bruce Smith who told me that you had dropped off the trophy & cetificate. Much appreciated. I will pick them up this weekend (Bruce wouldn't tell me what it was either !)

David,
Another local owner tells me that he has another car (YT3384) that is stamped "YT", as are the two cars his brother has. ( I haven't seen them myself).
Bob Simpson

Bob
Thanks for confirming that YT 3384 is stamped as YT. However, this fact indicates that the stamping of YT on the chassis from a certain date is an incorrect assumption to make. We know that YT 4267 & YT 4318 and most earlier cars were not stamped (with a T) but your car YT 4320 and my YT4619 both are. I have looked at the JPEG that you kindly sent me and can confirm a similarity between the stamping on our two cars.

Are there any other YT owners who are willing to climb under the chassis outrigger to find other chassis numbers stamped YT followed by the number? It would be good to establish a pattern.
