MG MG Y Type - YT door pocket
Hi all, Can someone help me with just how the pocket is fixed to the door card. LTBY's mentions it "was sewn directly into "slots" in the main door panel" (pg 189 LTBY's) How is this achieved? regards KGM |

Here are some pictures from David Pelham's YT to give you a view. Paul ![]() ![]() |

Thanks Paul for these great pics. But I am still confused (common enough state for me) LTBY's tells us the main covering of the door card was not padded, only the pocket was padded. These picture seem to say otherwise. Are the cards themselves "slotted"( LTBYs's wording) in any way. regards KGM |

KG Just checked how my upholsterer did my doors a few years ago. All of interior trim is leather (4 hides). The door is not padded with trim glued to board, and the door board has a slot just inside the level of the side and bottom edges of the pocket. The door upholstery goes through the slot and the bottom is glued to the inside of the door board, below the slot. The pocket is sewn to the board. I hope this description helps cheers Stuart |

Thanks Stuart, becoming a little clearer, however... Does the slot extend continuously or are there lands left every so often. And with reference to Paul's images, just where is the pocket sewn to the door card. It seems that the panel covering is sewn, but the pocket (inner row) could be fixed through the slot. (Maybe I've just got it wrong.) regards KG |

KG, I will not be able to check the door pocket details until Monday as the YT is not stored at home. Stuart |

KG,
I decided to do a quick run to my shed and check out my YT and see if I kept the previous door boards, unfortunately not. You may need to contact Tony Slattery to see if he has old door boards which can be photographed, inside and out. As can be seen in the attached photos, my upholstery isn't original, just made to look original. Other than Y owners (and there are only a few of us) no one will know they are not to the original design. As stated earlier my whole interior is leather. We couldn't get vinyl in the same colour. The following is how I think my door panel is covered. I can feel the slot, but cannot get a finger through it to feel the inside of the board. (forget my earlier post comments) My doors are padded, a slot is cut into the board around the outer lower edge of the pocket. The leather on the door passes through the slot and is stuck to the inside of the board. The pocket is padded with leather on the inside. Inside and outside of the pocket is the same piece of leather rolled over the top. The pocket leather is stuck together around the outer edges and extends through the slot and glued to the inside of the panel towards the door edge. I am unsure were the leather on the panel inside the pocket goes at the slot. Modern glue is a lot stronger than when our cars were built, so there is limited stitching of the leather to my door boards. I hope you can understand this explanation. Stuart ![]() ![]() |

The door cover is NOT PADDED (and was not padded in David's car either) however the pocket is and was "stitched" in columns as you can see. It was stitched onto the door card and was a full length pocket with full depth. Does that clarify it for you Ken? Paul |

Thanks guys.
Stuart, I think I can follow your description. The result is really good. Paul, David's version is a little more elaborate. I am not an upholsterer's bootlace, and am still flummoxed. I have no idea what stitched into columns means. Nor do I understand just where the door pocket is stitched to the door card. Presumably the outer edge is rolled into the slot. But LTBY's uses the phase "stitched into slots".? I have shown the images to others and they say that the vinyl on the door card "looks" to be padded, judging by the way the light shows that the fabric seems to be rolled where it passes under the hidem. Since this is not the case, I am not sure about inferring other details as well. Seems I'll just have to take my trimmers interpretation and hope. cheers KG |
