MG MG Y Type - YT Fuel Tank Needed

Help !!

My fuel tank in my 1948 MG YT has rusted through and I assume the only thing to be done is to replace it. The leak is wetting the electrical connection of the fuel level sender, causing the fuel pump to to cut out. It is not safe to drive as is.

Does anyone know where I might get a new, or rust free used tank for a 1948 MG YT?

Hi
if you don t find one,
this is the best man to make one ;-)

got a stainless steel tank for my TA from him at a reasonable price

if you buy a old one, the same problem again.

Hi Steve - would you consider having a new tank made? I live out "in the sticks", ie nowhere near a city with MG knowledgeable suppliers etc - mine is a YA, so there will be differences, BUT - I asked my local metal fabricator to copy exactly the original tank, use the original inlet and outlet fittings, improve the fixing arrangement for the sender unit (unf studs instead of those little brass setscrews) , and make it out of stainless steel. Cost - $680 Aussie dollars. I don't know how that compares in the States, but may be worth investigating.

I wish you luck with getting a new tank made Stephen but I fear you may have two problems. Fuel on the sender unit is unlikely to cause the pump to cut out as they are two separate systems. Neither is fuel on this connection liable to be a fire hazard in and of itself as MG T types have a fuel sender which operates immersed in fuel. It is hardly to be recommended though.
good luck

There is no difference between a YT, YA or YB fuel tank - they are all identical.

I had two tanks made in Stainless Steel last year, and all I can say is the next tank I have made will be in mild steel. The extra cost in stainless is not worth the effort, and leads to issues when reusing the original salvaged fittings. A new mild steel tank will outlast you and your children.

The sender units are not sealed from the fuel - the coils are covered in fuel all the time. It's likely the tank has a poor earth connection and that's why the gauge is not working - I have lost count of the number of Y-Type fuel gauges I have fixed by fitting a star washer to one of the mounting bolts.

I can confirm what Tony mentions about adding an earth wire to the fuel tank sender unit. It turned my fuel gauge from displaying slow fuel level changes to instant changes.
When I was rebuilding my car over 30 years ago I had my local radiator shop pull apart the fuel tank and clean/repair the fuel tank, maybe a radiator shop might be able to help your tank?

Thoroughly endorse, Tony Slattery’s comments and Steven Mister’s too.

Most likely an earthing problem.

Feel free to email me off line if you wish Stephen.

Steven,

When I had my gas tank "cleaned" by a Rad Shop that is local to me.... He ended up taking apart the tank, sandblasting, welding it all back together, and then sealing it. You would never know by looking at it, that any of that work had been done. I am sure that there are rad shops in Florida that can take apart a tank , repair and put back together some where near you.
