MG MG Y Type - YT Hood to frame attachment

Hi all
As you would have gathered from previous threads, I am getting a new hood made for my YT and would like to make it as authentic as possible.

My rear bow has 3 screws, other than the spacing strip screws. In the photo I have marked the screws with arrows. I am trying to work out if these screws and cup washers are original and if they were used to hold the hood to the frame.

I can find nothing in LTBYs and looking through the various threads that mention "Hood frame", I find no conclusive decision on these screws.

In the “YT Rear Window” thread of December 2008, Steven Koster in his 'first try' photo of his parent’s wedding car shows what appears to be a flap around the bow and just above the grooms head the end of the flap.

In the “YT Hood” thread of October 2017 to January 2018, in which Paul B, Tony S, Dave L and Anton P were researching YT Hood fastenings, Richard Prior mentions holes where my screws are located. Anton later mentions that a flap existed which wrapped around the bow and attached to the bow frame at the front. The last thread post by Paul, indicated subject was still under discussion.

Anton's "YT Hood Folding" item in IMGYTR "Hints and Tips" would indicate the hood is atached to the rear bow frame.

I have also seen photos of the rear of YT hoods where the outer seams appear to be attached by screws (and cup washers) to the rear bow frame.

Can someone please clarify these points, and if there is a flap wrapped around the rear bow frame where is it attached to the main piece of the hood.

This is an old photo of 40 years ago of YT in Ballarat.
The purpose just to show the rear of the roof, I remember the fabric was attached to the back bow but doesn’t appear so in this photograph , I know when I used to open the roof or fold it back the the fabric did attach to the bow , however this was a roof redone in 1970 by a motor trimmer and I can’t be sure it was done totally kosher , but the intent is to show how it appeared. In this case I don’t remember any method of external attachment with cup washers etc showing when erected .

I am interested in this post as I am now in possession 50 years later of another YT. That needs much work but can’t start yet due the thing!

In those o,d days we didn’t bother with chassis numbers etc but I would like to know the whereabouts of this car , I believe it is Western Australia now. It had a blue printed balanced motorr and it sang as sweet as a bell , not a clanging cymbal.

Camera image too large, try again later. Try this .

Clive, thank you for your comments.

I went completely through LTBYs last night looking at all photos and realised that the top left photo on pg 150 shows the material wrapping around the rear hood bow. It appears to cover the bow between the spacing straps.

I am now wondering where this wrapping strip is attached to the hood. Does this strip attach at the hood seam behind the rear bow? Does it wrap down the rear of the bow, and attach at the front or on top of the bow?

cheers

Hi Clive

I'll look up the Vic Roads records held by MGCC Victoria.

I spent some time last year putting some spreadsheets together.
I'll let you know or I can tell you next time you walk your dog past.
Social Distancing of course !

Hi Ian
Thanks for following up where theYT is , last I heard it was in WA.
The registration when I owned it was KUO 755 , that may help you and the fellow in Ballarat who bought from me changed it to the MG reg.
I pic of my mates who love to walk by your home.

Yes Clive YT 3737 still exists in WA and well used. You sold it to Norm Grose in Ballarat who has since passed on and the YT and a YA were shipped over to his daughter who lives about 180Kms north of Perth.
Nice Border Collie, we had one a few years ago, his name was Axle!!!
Say hullo to Ian next time you pass his gate!

Richard
Do you have an engine number for YT 3737.
I can't find any reference to MG 619 or KUO 755 on the Vic Roads records.
Vic Roads listed cars by engine number rather than chassis number.

There are at least 10 YT engines listed that don't have a chassis numbers so I can't cross reference. The do have the their first registration numbers but no subsequent ones.

Hello Ian & Richard. The original engine in YT3737 was TR/13581 and last I heard it was fitted with TR/12690.

The car was featured in "Restored Cars" magazine in September 1976 when owned by Ron Gay.

Thanks Tony

I remember Ron.

Well if the original Engine No was XPAG/TR/13581 the car was first registered PF 533 on the 27th of February 1950
No further details provided.

Engine No XPAG/SC/12690 came out of Y2834 and was first registered
NN 294 on 13th July 1949
and subsequently XR 079 on 19th March 1952,
HBX 225 on 8th December 1959
and finally JSP 960 0n 21st March 1967.

So ends the story.

Are you any the wiser Clive ?

cheers
Ian

Ps photo from MG Car Club Melbourne event in the late 1960s
What fun we had !

Ian Prior

Hi Ian Richard
Yes I am wiser thanks to your combined efforts, however I did first sell it to Ron Gay and then he sold it onto Norm Grose, who I don’t know.
Thanks for pointing out it was YT 3737 , it is sonewhat like genealogy .
I bought the car from a Dr John Rees but was registered in his mother’s name Gwen, the mother of my sisters good school friend. Then it was BRG with a salt and pepper hood in bad shape..
And yes I recall the article in Restored Cars and have Read the article in the reprint section.
Richard have you seen the car in WA, is it being looked after ?
Clive

No I haven't seen the car in the flesh but I believe she still drives the car quite regularly. It is a long way to nowhere where she lives but next time we have a good wildflower season we might venture out that way. Her YA is 1641. The story of the Rees family goes deeper. Both Ian and I went to school with their sons Peter and John and both the boys were in the same rowing crew as me. I remember quite well going to visit Peter in my TC to help him work on his Singer 9 with another school mate who had a nice Clipper blue TD. I also member seeing the YT sitting all forlorn in the driveway never going anywhere because I think it had a serious engine problem.
That's another page in the book!
Cheers

Yesterday whilst trying to find missing TD parts, I came across the tattered Hood which came with the YT when I purchased it. (I had forgotten about it)
This Hood is double duck, falling apart, has a very large rear non zip out window and LTDs fittings every 5” with no inner lower attaching flap, as mentioned in LTBYs. The Hood also has a flap across the rear above the window about where the hood would sit on the rear bow. All edges other than the inner side curtain flaps are trimmed with vinyl.

I do not know if this Hood is original, but if not it is an early replacement due to it being made of double duck Salt & Pepper material.

This Hood doesn't answer my original question re rear bow attachment, but raises other questions - re the flap above the rear window and size of rear window. The stitching around the window and on the flap are the same as elsewhere on the hood

The LTD spacing looks similar (ie 5") to that shown in the photo Clive posted earlier.

The area above the window on the inside has had modern vinyl added to strengthen the Hood over the rear bow - see photo.

Photos attached:
1) shows rear window from exterior, LTD spacing and flap above window. Darker fabric is inner fabric.
2) shows inside of rear window and modern vinyl strengthening.

When Ron Taylor's Salt & Pepper fabric arrives next week, I will post comparison photos on the Hood material thread.

Sorry about length of thread, but throught I should let you know of this find, as it gives me more to consider when getting the new hood made. Window size & zip out or not, LTD positions, and rear flap above window.

cheers
Stuart
